From Pemberley to Trump Tower: Jane Austen Quotes Meet Trump Tweets

Elizabeth Allen

Staff Writer

Lifelong book lover, Elizabeth Allen managed to get a degree in something completely unrelated that she never intends to use. She’s a proud Connecticut native who lives in a picturesque small town with her black olive-obsessed toddler daughter, her prom date-turned-husband, and her two dim-witted cats Penny Lane and Gretchen Wieners. She spends her days trying to find a way to be paid to read while drinking copious amounts of coffee, watching episodes of Gilmore girls until the DVDs fail, waiting for her husband to feed her, and being obnoxiously vain about her hair. Elizabeth’s work can be found at www.blackwhitereadbooks.com, where she is currently reading and reviewing all of the books referenced in Gilmore girls. She is also the cohost of two podcasts discussing the work of Amy Sherman-Palladino (“Under the Floorboards” and “Stumbling Ballerinas”). Basically, her entire goal in life is to be a bookish Lorelai Gilmore. She clearly dreams big. Twitter: @BWRBooks

We’re celebrating Jane Austen on this, the day of her death, with a bevy of posts about her work and legacy. See all the posts here.

With NPR being accused of trolling Republicans with the *snort* posting of the Declaration of the Independence this past 4th of July, I started wondering what Trump supporters would think if they saw Jane Austen quotes shared on social media.

So whether you read this while luxuriating at Pemberley or being blinded by gilt at Trump Tower, here are a few Jane Austen/45 quote combinations that made me chuckle.

“It is very difficult for the prosperous to be humble.”

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”

“The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.”

“For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors, and laugh at them in our turn.”

“You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

“It sometimes happens that a woman is handsomer at twenty-nine than she was ten years before.”

“I cannot speak well enough to be unintelligble”

“Respect for right conduct is felt by every body.”

“Vanity working on a weak head produces every sort of mischief.”

“Every man is surrounded by a neighborhood of voluntary spies.”

“From politics, it was an easy step to silence.”

“One of the key problems today is that politics is such a disgrace, good people don’t go into government.”

“One does not love a place the less for having suffered in it, unless it has all been all suffering, nothing but suffering.”

“No man is offended by another man’s admiration of the woman he loves; it is only the woman who can make it a torment.”

“Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of the disappointed love.”

“Nobody who has not been in the interior of a family, can say what the difficulties of any individual of that family may be.”
