5 Comics to Watch for in August
1. Revenger #4 by Charles Forsman
Ultra-violent indie comic from powerhouse cartoonist, Charles Forsman. Must-read for fans of over-the-top 80’s action flicks. Support this book and support this creator! If you’re into pre-ordering books, Forsman often includes nifty extras like patches and posters for a small fee. This is already available digitally from Comixology, print copy is hopefully shipping sometime this month!
2. Howard the Human #1 by Skottie Young and Jim Mahfood
I’m really looking forward to see what Skottie Young and Jim Mahfood bring to the table for this Secret Wars one-shot. After getting hooked on Mahfood after reading his Miami Vice: Remix that just wrapped up last month, I’m ecstatic that he is taking on one of my all-time favorite Marvel characters. Get it on August 19 from Marvel.
3. Secret Wars: Secret Love #1 by Felipe Smith, Michel Fiffe, Marguerite Bennett, Katie Cook, Jeremy Whitely, Kris Anka and Gurihiru
Ok, so this is Marvel’s kissing book for Secret Wars. I have to be honest, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by some of these Secret Wars books. I’m totally on board for more. I’m not sure how many stories are in this book nor what characters are featured in them. All I know is #1 Michel Fiffe is writing AND drawing a Daredevil/Typhoid Mary story and #2 Kamala Khan is featured in another story. Those are enough for me to snag this book the day it comes out. Buy it on August 19 from Marvel!
4. Phonogram: The Immaterial Girl #1 by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Matthew Wilson
ANOTHER PHONOGRAM SERIES!!! I’m pretty excited about this one. If you’re a music buff like me, this series is a must-read. Hell, even if you aren’t a music buff, this is a must-read. It’s THAT good, trust me. And if you don’t trust me, check out this wonder article by fellow Panelteer Ali Colluccio about her experience with the series. It’s one of those books that will no-doubt leave a mark on you if it strikes the right chord. I have no doubt in my mind that Volume 3 will be just as awesome as the first two. Available on August 12 from Image!
5. Invisible Republic, Vol. 1 by Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko
Invisible Republic is one of my favorite newer ongoing Image Books. It’s a gritty poly-sci-fi story about a reporter digging up the truth behind the history and rise to power of a dictator on a colonized moon. The level of world building in this book is absolutely astounding. It’s one of those books that I itch for every month. Co-creators Hardman and Bechko continue to prove to be some of the most skillful in the game. As usual, this Image Volume 1 collection is priced at the ultra-affordable $10 and totally worth picking up so you can start reading this on a monthly basis. Get it on August 26 from Image!
