As soon as the weather starts to change (and it definitely took it’s time about it this year), I’m ready to cozy up with some good books by the fireplace. And since—according to every crafts store on the continent—the beginning of October marks the beginning of Halloween season, it seems like something seasonally appropriate would be best. And I’ve got a few perfectly creepy ones in mind. From the uncannily supernatural to the downright chilling, you’ll definitely want to read these 6 spooky comics to get in the Halloween spirit.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina from 6 Spooky Comics To Get In The Halloween Spirit | bookriot.comThe Chilling Adventures of Sabrina by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Robert Hack, and Jack Morelli

With the new Netflix series coming out this month, now is the perfect time to read this horrifying comic. And trust me, this is not the teen witch you remember. Sabrina Spellman may still have a black cat and live with her aunts, but there’s less finger pointing and teen hijinx and more blood rituals and selling your soul to the devil here. 10/10 on the creepiness scale, but definitely perfect to get you in the Halloween spirit.

Monstress from 6 Spooky Comics To Get In The Halloween Spirit | bookriot.comMONSTRESS by Marjorie M. Liu, Sana Takeda, Rus Wooton, and Jennifer M. Smith

Less horror, more fantasy with a healthy dose of creepy supernatural forces. This story is set in a gorgeously illustrated alternate 1900s steampunk Asia. War, ancient gods, monsters, human-animal hybrids, talking cats…okay, that last one doesn’t sound particularly creepy, but it is fun. This is one of my favorite current comic runs. And it’s just monstrous and creepy enough to make it perfect for a slightly spooky October read.

My Favorite Thing Is Monsters from 6 Spooky Comics To Get In The Halloween Spirit | bookriot.comMy Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris

Monsters and murder mysteries. Karen Reyes, a young werewolf living in 1960s Chicago with her human mother and brother, is obsessed with mysteries—a quirk that comes in handy when her neighbor is murdered. Between all the monsters, murder, and Ferris’s uncanny artwork, this graphic novel is definitely one murder mystery perfect for the season.

X-23:The Killing Dream from 6 Spooky Comics To Get In The Halloween Spirit | bookriot.comX-23 by Marjorie M. Liu, Alina Urusov, Will ConRad, and Sana Takeda

You may recognize the name Laura Kinney from the Logan movie, but she’s also known as X-23. X-23, aka Wolverine’s teenage clone who was raised to be a killing machine. And if that doesn’t sound like the premise for a pretty horrifying comic, then let’s add to it the fact that Logan was recently possessed by a demon bent on destroying everyone he cares about (including Laura) and dragging her down to hell with him.

Clean Room from 6 Spooky Comics To Get In The Halloween Spirit | bookriot.comClean Room by Gail Simone, Jon Davis-Hunt, Quinton Winter, Todd Klein, and Jenny Frison

What’s creepier than cults and an impending supernatural apocalypse? Not a lot, to be honest. Except maybe if that cult was led by a mysterious self-help guru (Astrid Mueller) who had a near death experience as a child and whose followers now have a terrifying tendency of killing themselves. And when journalist Chloe Pierce’s fiancée becomes one of them, she decides it’s time to get some answers. Who is Astrid Mueller? What is the Clean Room? And are these terrifying supernatural visions she’s having real?

Lady Mechanika from 6 Spooky Comics To Get In The Halloween Spirit | bookriot.comLady Mechanika by Joe Benítez

She has no memory of who she is or why she was created. The tabloids called her “Lady Mechanika,” and she’s the sole survivor of a mad scientist’s terrible experiments. Now she’s built a life for herself as a private investigator, going after the cases the authorities can’t—or won’t—handle. But she’s never stopped looking for the answers about her own past. This steampunk world of monsters and airships has a decidedly creepy vibe perfect for Halloween.
