In 2016, journalist Arwen Curry kickstarted a documentary about Ursula K. Le Guin, which received more than twice the goal amount. Now, two years later, she’s released the first trailer for “Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin.” And it looks beautiful. The trailer shows interview excerpts from Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, and Theodora Goss, among others, and features Le Guin herself explaining magic and the creative process. Curry was able to collaborate with Le Guin in the years preceding Le Guin’s death in January. She combines those interviews with archival footage as well as interviews with Le Guin scholars and fans.
I can think of no other contemporary author whose richness of thought compares to Le Guin’s. I cannot wait to watch this documentary, tissues handy, and sink deeper into the life and body of work of one of the greatest authors of our time.
“To learn to make something well can take your whole life,” Le Guin says at the end of the trailer. “And it’s worth it.” (cue tears)
Here’s the documentary trailer. What do you think?
