Books and crochet: what do they have in common, other than my undying love? Well, they can both be used to open up a world of imagination. They’re also hobbies that can be explored in a diverse range of ways, with various genres and formats of books to read and techniques and forms of crochet to try. Not to mention, you can learn to knit and crochet from books. I love a hobby within a hobby.

As a reader and crocheter, I’m always looking for new ways to combine my two loves. I’ve shared some of my favorite bookish crochet and knitting patterns, but that list barely even touched on one of the coolest forms of crochet: amigurumi. The word Amigurumi comes from the Japanese term for a knitted or crocheted stuffed toy. It’s essentially the art of creating stuffed animals, dolls, or figurines from yarn. And once you realize you can make essentially anything you can imagine out of yarn, well, the possibilities are endless. I’ve made little frogs and pigs wearing heart-shaped sunglasses for my nephews before and even a freehanded No-Face plushie from Spirited Away.

What I’m saying is, once you start making amigurumi, you aren’t going to want to stop. You can make a dog that looks just like your own or a little mushroom man. Or, if you’re a bookworm—and if you’re reading this article, you probably are—maybe you want to make yarn versions of all your favorite literary characters. These literary-inspired amigurumi patterns are a great place to start.

Before we get to all the cuteness, we want to hear from you! Take our quick survey and share your thoughts.
