Starting in Korea in the early 1900s, this fantastic novel is a powerful multigenerational saga about what it means to try and find your place in the world. Beginning during the Japanese occupation of Korea, Pachinko details the story of one family’s move from Korea to Japan and highlights the discrimination Korean immigrants faced in Japan throughout the 20th century. It is a part of history that is not referenced much in fiction, and Lee does a marvelous job infusing love and life into the heartbreak and suffering experienced by the Koreans. Be prepared to lose yourself in this big, gorgeous book.
