The best romantasy series captures the imagination. The fantastical romance and world-building come together to create an evocative story you cannot look away from, even if you want to. And these days, it feels like everyone’s eye is on the subgenre.

Romantasy is a heavily debated portamento combining the fantasy and romance genres that has recently gained traction in publishing. Some people say the books can be fantasy books with romance subplots, other say they should be romance books set in a fantasy world. I operate under the belief that a satisfying romantasy book has at least one central romance with a Happily Ever After/ Happy for Now (HEA/HFN). When I go into a romantasy book, the romance is a central pillar to the story.

While the name for the genre is new—and the debate around what is or isn’t romantasy is hot—the appeal of stories combining both fantasy and romance has been around for a long time. Reaching into the past, medieval Breton lais written by people like Marie de France told stories of chivalrous knights having affairs with married noble women. Some of those knights could transform into hawks, others had the aid of magical boats, and oftentimes, there was a fantasy element that complemented the romance at the heart of the stories.

While these were not genre romances or novels, the story elements are an important anchor for romantasy today, which owes its more immediate roots to the success of more recent adult romantasy series pre-portamento. The 2006 Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh, the 2016 Kingmaker Chronicles Series by Amanda Bouchet, and The Queens of Renthia series by Sarah Beth Durst are clear precursors to romantasy as we know it today.

Now, the best romantasy series I decided to recommend have either a certified HEA/HFN or—for unfinished series—a strong indication that the book series will end in an HEA/HFN based on a personal judgment call. I adore many excellent fantasy series with romance subplots, but those books are best left for a future list. I can guarantee these are the best romantasy series with a HEA/HFN for fans of the genre.

Finished Romantasy Series to Consume Immediately

The Five Crowns of Okrith by A.K. Mulford

In Okrath, the five kingdoms are in turmoil. Throughout this queer romantasy series, five couples find ways to secure their respective thrones and right the wrongs of previous rulers who abused their power, all while finding love along the way.

The High Mountain Court introduces Remy, the only surviving red witch, hiding in a tavern at the end of the kingdom, and Hale, the fae prince of the eastern kingdom, who needs the help of the last red witch to save his people from the tyranny of the Northern Court King. Offering the perfect mix of world-building, queer romance, and action, The Five Crowns of Okrith explores what it means to build a home from the ground up, even if it requires a bit of blood.

The Kingston Cycle by C. L. Polk

A queer historical romantasy classic, The Kingston Cycle sets witches, angels, and magic in postwar Edwardian England. Noble family cabals control the nation’s magic supply. Since everything from the weather to the electrical grid relies on magic users, their power is immeasurable. Still, the dark secret to their power is something that could collapse the country at any moment.

The first book, Witchmark, follows a runaway noble witch, Miles Singer, who is making a life for himself as a veteran’s doctor. Trouble finds him one day when a dying man asks him to solve his murder. Luckily, a beautiful and mysterious man is more than happy to help him uncover the truth. Throughout the series, three couples work to dismantle existing power structures to free those bearing the brunt of the noble’s power play.

The Tithenai Chronicles by Foz Meadows

When an envoy witnesses Velasin’s preference for men during an assault by an ex-partner, he believes his life is over. Vel’s homophobic family is ready to disown him, and he believes his diplomatic marriage to a noblewoman from a neighboring country is also off the table—until the envoy offers her brother instead. Marriage in an unfamiliar but queernormative country was enough to unsettle Vel without his new husband Caethari’s confusing kindness. But even their unexpectedly strong partnership may not be enough to stop the assassins on Vel’s heels. The duology’s couple must navigate an openly queer life in a deadly political landscape, all while muddling through internalized homophobia and questions of self-worth.

Artifacts of Ouranos by Nisha J. Tuli

Tuli’s romantasy series details Lor’s journey from obscurity to the throne. Trial of the Sun Queen introduces Lor twelve years into her imprisonment at a work camp with her two siblings. One day, she is taken from solitary confinement and awakes in a castle as the latest contestant in a contest to become the next queen of a nearby kingdom. Lor doesn’t have a clue why she was chosen, but she will do her best to survive if it means freeing her siblings and securing their safety. In a world manipulated by an ancient fae ruling class, one’s skill with magic and politics can mean the difference between life and death. Lor’s hidden ability to manipulate them both might just change things for the better.

The Last Binding trilogy by Freya Marske

Set in a version of Edwardian England with magic, The Last Binding trilogy follows three queer couples on a mission to protect magic amidst murder, mayhem, and far too many secrets.

Robin in A Marvellous Light is thrust into a magical murder mystery when he lands a job as the human parliamentary liaison to the magic world. His surly magical counterpart, Edwin, will do his best to keep Robin alive, but they are up against powerful forces. Those forces only grow in danger as Robin, Edwin, and their friends continue to thwart their plans.

These Treacherous Tides by D.N. Bryn

This steampunk fantasy world filled with merfolk, pirates, and other strange things will have you reexamine what it means to develop trust through open communication in a dangerous world that teaches you to doubt.

In These Treacherous Tides, each romance is equal parts thoughtful and strange, starting with the asexual monster romance Our Bloody Pearl. Perle is a captured siren looking for their freedom, ready to kill whatever humans they have to in order to escape the bathtub at the bottom of a pirate ship. They never expected another pirate to free them, but Dejean is happy to prove Perle wrong, no matter how long it takes. The more Dejean learns to communicate with Perle, the stronger their affinity grows. He is determined to keep them out of the hands of the pirate who captured the siren in the first place, even if it means risking his life to do so.

That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming Book Cover

Mead Mishaps by Kimberly Lemming

With titles like That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon and That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf, readers should expect to have fun with Lemming’s sexy, silly, and scrumptious cozy romantasy series. In Mead Mishaps, three capable, practical human women must deal with wild problems as they arise. If they didn’t all have demon mates who were charged with defeating evil witches, waiting out love potions, and dealing with other magical mishaps, they would probably be leading quiet lives as the funniest group of friends you’ve ever met. If you are looking for an opportunity to laugh, this is the trilogy for you.

A Broken Blade by Melissa Blair Book Cover

The Halfling Saga by Melissa Blair

What’s a romantasy book without a lovable assassin who has to save a kingdom? Keera, the assassin at the heart of The Halfling Saga, has a lot to learn over four books as she goes from the King’s Blade to rebel leader.

In A Broken Blade, her skills as a spy, assassin, and hunter are put to the test when she follows a masked man into the Faeland. Navigating the Fae and their magical land is only the beginning of her problems. Soon, she realizes her enemy might not be the mysterious figure she chases but the king who she owes her allegiance to. Keera must reevaluate everything she knows if she wants to save herself and the kingdom she swore to protect.

Unfinished Romantasy Series to Keep Up With

Realm of Four Kingdoms by Jayci Lee

A kitsune looking to run from her past is forced to confront the magic world when a friend she left behind is murdered and his brother shows up looking for her help. The Realm of Four Kingdoms is a Korean folklore-inspired romantasy series with rich worldbuilding, a compelling romance, and heart-pounding action.

Nine Tailed introduces Sunny, a century-old kitsune keeping a low profile working in a Vegas casino. When Ethan tracks her down to ask her to help find out who killed his brother, she can’t help but say yes, especially since she thinks it might be her fault. The world of the gods she left behind is bigger and more complicated than she ever allowed herself to know. Now Sunny must learn the extent of her power if she wants to stop an evil force that will destroy the world if she’s not careful.

Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocy

The Wildersongs Trilogy by Maiga Doocy

The Wildersongs Trilogy is a delightful combination of cozy academia and romantasy in a tender, sincere, funny bundle. Class clown, noble menace, and small magic connoisseur Leovander Loveage refuses to repeat the mistake that ruined his life by writing anything powerful enough to cause harm. The powerfully talented, low-born, notoriously stern Sebastian Grimm cannot help but despise him for it. They have managed to avoid each other at the college up until now, but their luck runs out when they get paired in sorcery class. When a forbidden spell gets mixed into Sebastian’s spell folder, he accidentally curses Leo. Now Leo must follow all of Sebastian’s demands, and Leo cannot physically stand being separated from Sebastian for long. They must secretly determine how to undo the curse or suffer the consequences. Who knows, they might just stop hating each other along the way.

A Fire in the Sky by Sophie Jordan Book Cover

A Fire in the Sky by Sophie Jordan

What might be my favorite dragon romantasy series, A Fire in the Sky, gives Tamsyn an arranged marriage, a stern borderland ruler, and a set of dangerous powers to deal with…and that was after a violent childhood as the royal whipping girl. Raised alongside the princesses as their adopted sister, the king sees the perfect opportunity to pass Tamsyn off as a real princess when a notorious borderland lord asks for a royal marriage in exchange for his continued military protection. Fell was looking to secure his people’s safety. Instead, he gets stuck with a fake princess he is incredibly attracted to. Fell and Tamsyn must quickly develop a secure partnership if they want to navigate a set of suspiciously dragon-like abilities that could doom them both.

The Eye of the Goddess by Sariah Wilson

A Greco-roman-inspired epic romantasy series set in a world where securing the gods’ favor spells the difference between life and death, The Eye of the Goddess certainly doesn’t pull any punches.

In A Tribute of Fire, Princess Lia spent a year training to voluntarily enter the deadly goddess sacrifice, where two young women from her nation are selected to race to the goddess’s temple. In doing so, Lia believes she can save her people from the goddess’s wrath and the drought curse that has plagued her nation. Just one problem: no one has survived the task. After all, every man in the city is encouraged to try to murder the women before they can make it to the temple. With the help of a suspiciously good-looking and kind foreign man, Lia might just be able to accomplish her goal, but getting to the temple is only the beginning of her struggle to save her people and stay alive in the meantime.
