Always books. Never boring.

Despite the title of this series, it’s impossible to have up-to-date information about bestsellers. In fact, most lists report on numbers not from last week but the week before. (Amazon is the exception, which is able to offer you the bestsellers of the hour, if you’re interested.) That means this list of bestsellers reflects the holiday shopping season, and I would guess that a lot of people got the biggest books of 2024 under their tree, like James by Percival Everett and The Women by Kristin Hannah.

Another rarely discussed aspect of the bestseller lists is that most exclude children’s books, which are often the biggest sellers of the moment. This week, the latest Dog Man was the #1 bestseller on Publishers Weekly, but because The New York Times and Indie Bestseller lists separate kids’ books out, it’s at the bottom of this roundup and almost didn’t make the list at all.

This week’s roundup includes more authors of color than usual, which is a welcome surprise, but that’s the exception to a list that’s usually almost entirely by white authors. Some Indie Bestsellers you should know about are Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar and The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

To get these numbers, we look at the USA Today overall top 10; Publishers Weekly overall top 10; The New York Times top 10, both Combined Print & E-Book Fiction and Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction lists; Amazon Charts top 10, both Fiction and Nonfiction; and Indie Bestsellers top 10, Fiction and Nonfiction, both Paperback and Hardcover. New additions to the list this week are bolded.
