10 Black Women Bookstagrammers to Follow this February

We’ve been talking about the need for diverse books for a long time on Book Riot, and even the need for more attention on diverse bookstagram accounts. It’s been lovely in the past few years to see how this cause has grown and achieved remarkable victories. I remember when the YA bestseller list was often populated with all white authors, often all white men. Now, it’s not uncommon to open the paper on Sunday and see the list dominated by women of color. And #ownvoices has become a rallying cry in publishing and among readers.

Social media has made so much of this shift possible. Trying to populate my internet life with reviewers, recommenders, and authors of color has helped me understand the need for these changes and diversify my own reading. But more change, more diversity, and more gatekeepers of color are definitely needed. This Black History Month, I want to specifically suggest you follow these ten beautiful bookstagram accounts run by black women.

Recommendation ☕️ . Hi my loves. I hope you are having an absolutely wonderful Wednesday. . Octavia E. Butler is my favorite author…as in #1. I have read every single one of her books and I am ashamed. I have been doing my “bookstagram”, blog & really this community a disservice by not talking about her more and sharing more of her work. I don’t even know where to begin with her writing in general but it’s brilliant. This is the Earthseed series {Parable of the Sower & Parable of the Talents} The way she wrote this series with such a sense of premonition about the future that we are living in right now blows my mind. If you love post apocalyptic stories then put this on your radar. {Think Station Eleven on a thousand though}. . I ordered these editions from @7storiespress as soon as @_wolfandmoon told me about them. The covers….my heart😭. Parable of the Sower has a foreword by Gloria Steinem and Parable of the Talents has a foreword by Toshi Reagen. As you’re compiling your list of diverse reads, here’s another author and series to add. It’s my absolute favorite. . UPDATE: Artwork done by Paul Lewin😭 @paullewinart

Today I made Outlander stew which is a half recipe I found online and half of whatever I came up with and I'm eating it right now and YALL. I MIGHTA JUST DID SOMETHING!!!😭😭 • It's so delicious. Like this is the best stew I've ever made! It's got all kinds of vegetables and stuff in it. Do I know what it is? Nope. I got this vegetable soup mix aka props but also food and then used a stew mix I found online and VOILA❤️ my awesome, tasty outlander soup is tasty! • I'm going to go sing a song of a lass that can cook good Scottish stews that aren't really Scottish but also kinda Scottish! I hope everyone had a fantastical day!✨❤️ #bookstagram #bookworm #booklover #epicreads #outlander #outlanderkitchencookbook #outlanderkitchen #clairefraser #lairdoflallybroch #cookbook

Transparency: "Helory why are you single?" Me: "Because I have shit to do." . . . I've never been in a relationship (middle school does not count lol). I never been on a "real" date. And I'm perfectly fine with that. I'm not one to search for people, the man of my heart will sooner or later work his way into my life and I'm cool with waiting. I may make jokes with my friends about me being lonely af, but honest to God I only I said I wanted a boyfriend so there could be someone to bring me food when I'm lazy 🤷🏽‍♀️ lol. . . . Some people picked on me about my "singleness", one even questioned my sexuality because of it. A relative once asked me what I look for most in a guy, and when I told her I just want him to be genuine, ambitious, communitive, and a feminist or I don't want him. She told me: "You're too picky." As if that's a bad thing. When one of my closest friends got engaged last year, my mom looked at me expectantly saying: "Where's yours?" I shrugged and replied "Probably with his girlfriend somewhere not knowing I exist yet." and walked away. . . . I am comfortable with being alone. There are many joys to it actually. And there is nothing wrong with it. There is also nothing wrong with being picky in who you spend and give your time to, because not everyone deserves your time, your energy, or your love. I'm 23 years old, and have a lot of soul searching left to do, so I'm not too fond of the idea of someone potentially disrupting my peace. My worth, my importance cannot, and will not be, measured by whether if I am or am not in a relationship or married with kids. I just do not care for that societal construct bullshit.
