Inbox/Outbox: March 6, 2015

In Inbox/Outbox, we document the rhythm of readers’ lives by sharing comics we acquired, the comics we finished, and the next comics we plan to read each week.

Inbox (Comics Acquired)

undertakingThe Undertaking of Lily Chen by Danica Novgodroff (First Second)

Honestly, I don’t really know what this book is about. The art is so gorgeous and the cover is so breathtaking that I couldn’t resist picking it up. I’ve heard people rave about this book, though, so I’m looking forward to getting to it.

Gotham Academy #1 by Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher, Karl Kersckl, and Geysr (DC Comics)

I’ve heard great things about this series, so I’m excited to start it and see what all the hype is about!

The Realist by Asaf Hanuka (Archaia, April 28)

I am a graphic memoir fan; in fact, graphic memoirs were my gateway into comics as an adult. That’s why I was so excited to receive this. It’s a collection of weekly autobiographical comic strips about life in Tel Aviv, and it hits a lot of my buttons (memoir, cultural, set in another country).

Outbox (Comics Finished)

captain-marvel-2012Captain Marvel (2012–2013) #1–17 by Kelly Sue DeConnick, Dexter Soy, and Filipe Andrade (Marvel Comics)

I binged on this series, and it was SO good. I understand now why everyone is such a fan of Carol Danvers. You know, I was excited for the Captain Marvel movie because woohooo! Ladies unite!! before, but now I’m just excited because she is just an incredible, complex, kick-ass character.

Princess Leia #1 by Mark Waid and Terry Dodson (Marvel Comics)

I was so excited about this series, like so many other people. I was really glad it took place directly after the end of Star Wars: A New Hope (we’re talking the first scenes of the comic are in the throne room). We get to see more of Leia’s history and how she’s dealing with the destruction of her planet. I felt like the portrayal of Leia was a little uneven, but as one Panelteer pointed out to me on Twitter, she’s uneven in the movies as well. Regardless, I’m looking forward to more issues!

In the Queue (What I’m Reading Next)

valiant-1The Valiant #1 by Matt Kindt, Jeff Lemire, and Paolo Rivera

I like entry points into big comics universes, so the idea of The Valiant #1 really appeals to me.

Descender #1 by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen (Image Comics)

I love sci fi stories, but I’ve never really gotten into the genre in print. The little I’ve read, though, I’ve enjoyed, so I’m looking forward to this first issue.
