Movie Adaptation of TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE Begins Production

A movie adaptation of Jenny Han’s bestselling Young Adult romantic comedy, To All the Boys I’ve Love Before, is being produced by Awesomeness Films (Before I Fall) and Overbrook Entertainment (Will Smith’s production company). It was reported in 2014 that Overbrook had secured the rights to the novel, so this movie has been a long time coming.

Lana Condor (X-Men’s Jubilee) will star as Lara Jean, a high school girl whose secret love letters to the five boys she’s loved are unexpectedly mailed. The movie also stars John Corbett (Northern Exposure, Raising Helen) as Lara Jean’s dad, Janel Parrish (Pretty Little Liars) and Anna Cathcart (Descendants 2) as her two sisters, and Noah Centineo (The Fosters) and Israel Broussard (The Bling Ring) as Peter and Josh, two of the letter recipients.

Some fans expressed disappointment at the news of the casting on social media. Lara Jean is half-Korean in the book, but Condor is Vietnamese-American, and Asian identities are often treated as interchangeable (or even erasable) in Hollywood. The author has supported the casting.

As a huge YA fan and YA author, I’m excited at every new YA adaptation announced, but am especially thrilled to see To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before make its way to the big screen.
