the summer that melted everythingThe Summer That Melted Everything by Tiffany McDaniel This is a dark, fabulous, original, bold novel. (Did I mention it’s dark?) The devil accepts an invitation to Ohio in the middle of a scorching summer, appearing in the form of a thirteen-year-old boy. The son of the local prosecutor, thinking he’s nothing but a young runaway, brings him home to stay with his family. But the townspeople still manage to hear the rumor that the actual devil is in their town, bringing fears, suspicions and old grievances boiling to the surface. And you know that’s never good. This novel is delicious – it’s like Flannery O’Connor meets Shirley Jackson. Profound, profoundly unsettling, and – as we say in Maine – wicked amazing. Backlist blurb: The Weirdness by Jeremy Bushnell (For the ‘devil comes to town’ storyline. This one is great fun!)
