“Dracula” is getting the “Sherlock” treatment, with the writers and producers of the hit BBC detective series reuniting for a new take on the Bram Stoker vampire classic … “Sherlock” propelled Benedict Cumberbatch to international stardom for his portrayal of Holmes. With scripts not yet written, casting for “Dracula” is some way off.
…Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse, the brainchild of Philly resident Ariell Johnson, is spread out, light-filled and roomy –– the sprawling comic displays, coffee bar and plush couches are the first visual cues that the Kensington comic emporium is not like its peers.
This week, the Knight Foundation selected Johnson out of more than 4,500 applicants to receive a grant of $50,000.
Over the last two weeks, I’ve watched The Handmaid’s Tale in its entirety. I’ve been enthralled by how the Hulu adaptation has presented a chilling world where women’s rights have been eroded down to nothing. It’s a great show with all the hallmarks of Peak TV—well-executed thematic ambition, sharp production design and strong performances. But I’ve been bothered by nagging sensations when I stop and think about how it’s portraying people of color or, rather, how it’s not portraying them.
