But even if the past year did a number on you or your book club members, there are already so many 2026 releases to be excited about. Tayari Jones is back to chronicle another section of American life—this time focusing on sisterhood. Jennette McCurdy, meanwhile, is wading through more taboo territory, and Sunyi Dean has a historical dark fantasy that is set in the legendary Hong Kong slum Kowloon.
After the quiet of December, publishing has come back with a very exciting line-up of new queer books out in January! We have releases from big-name authors like Emily Austin and Julian Winters, as well as writers making their debuts. One trend I noticed this month is retellings: we have a gay Charlie and the Chocolate Factory romance, a queer retelling of a 12th-century werewolf story, an even-more-lesbian Mean Girls, and a queer YA retelling of The Great Gatsby. People who enjoy hobbies like knitting, coloring, bird-watching, and crocheting often find them relaxing. Experts suggest that learning new skills, particularly those that engage different areas of the brain and body, can enhance concentration and creativity. Plus, many of these activities are the perfect way to “go analog” and log off the internet for a bit.
Looking at some of the bestsellers of the past five years in romance novels, we can identify a bunch of new tropes that are dominating. As trends like enemies-to-lovers, second-chance romance, and forced proximity have continued to grow, there are even more sub-tropes coming from within them. A lot of romance tropes also come from the fanfiction writers who have started to really take over the romance genres. Writers are now much more proudly able to explain their fanfiction origins, even with original stories. No matter your preference in romance, you’ll find something to strike your fancy.
