It’s Comic Book Day! And we get two brand new titles from Marvel. The long awaited, all-female Avengers team, A-Force and the first issue of the Spider-Verse.

In their honor, we could also call today Strong-Ass Women Wednesday.

Because, oh boy, are these women strong as hell.

Spider-Verse #1 is largely the story of Spider-Gwen Stacy. She’s stranded on Battleworld with no recollection as to how she got there, only that there is something she should know. Despite not knowing how she got there or what’s going on, the issue opens with Gwen bantering and kicking butt anyway. She may not know much, but she does know she’s supposed keep the bad guys down.

Turns out this is happening with a few of our other Spider-People as well.  Pravitr Parker (a personal favorite), Anya Corazon, Spider-Man UK, Spider-Ham, and Spider-Man Noir are all caught up in whatever is going on in Battleworld and they can only rely on each other to figure it all out. (I’m not sure how they’re not all all still totally exhausted from fighting Morlun and the gang in Edge of the Spider-Verse, God knows I would want a million naps after that whole kerfuffle.)

Mike Costa’s written an incredibly intriguing first issue, and I love that we get So Much Gwen. This isn’t exactly the angsting, sarcastic Gwen Stacy we know from Spider-Gwen, but she’s still intelligent, resourceful, and unafraid. She’s still a joy to read. And Andrew Lima Araujo’s art is so dynamic and readable. It’s a great introduction to this new series. (Also the characters with the most lines: a woman, a person of color, and a ham. I’m into it.)

Then we have A-Force #1! I’m not going to lie, I’ve had a print out of the cover hanging on my office wall since it was released. I was so excited to read about this new series from G. Willow Wilson and Marguerite Bennett. Two women writing about an all-female team? YES, PLEASE.

And what a team it is! Set on one of the self-contained lands in Battleworld called Arcadia, we’ve got She-Hulk at the helm, with the Goddess of Secrets Loki, her wards Niko Minoru and America Chavez, Carol Danvers, Dazzler, Medusa, Storm, Jean Grey, and many more of our favorite women of Marvel (I think I spied a certain Private Eye in one of the panels). As ever, GWW and Marguerite Bennett do not disappoint. The story will excite you, will give you anxiety, and a healthy dash of righteous indignation (because hello, it’s still Doom in charge of everything). I can’t wait to see how these women affect the course of the Secret Wars storyline. I think it’s going to make an impact.

As far as being able to follow the story without keeping up with Secret Wars goes, there are plot points that will not make sense if you’re not familiar with the basic idea of what is going on in the Marvel Universe.

That being said, I still highly recommend snagging both issues today and reading your heart out because you are not going to want to miss out on this train.
