Upcoming Marvel Movies: Predictions for MCU Fans
Well folks, we’ve reached it. The end of the line. Eleven years and 22 films later, we’ve seen the conclusion of some epic storytelling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether we agreed with every plot twist or not, it’s kind of hard to believe that the Avengers as we know it is done and finished. What on earth is a MCU fan to do now? Sure, Spider-Man: Far From Home is on the horizon, but what about the years to come? Thankfully, Disney has announced their theatrical movie release schedule through 2027, and bless them, there are so many new Marvel movies coming out. Let’s take a look at the list, shall we?
As you can see, there are no official titles attached to any of these new Marvel movies coming out. They could literally be anything. Now, I consider myself something of an expert on the MCU, so I’ve been deducing clues, putting the pieces together, and after a few weeks of intense study, I believe I have cracked it. Without further ado, here is my thoroughly researched and probably very correct assessment of the release dates of the new Marvel movies coming out.
May 1, 2020
Okay, we know that Marvel is going to make a second Black Panther movie, and they probably want to do that within two years of the first one, so we can safely say this is the release date for Black Panther 2. And back in January, rumors started going around about Michael B. Jordan possibly reprising his role as Eric Killmonger in the Black Panther sequel. But how? He’s dead, right? BUT WHAT IF HE WASN’T ALL DEAD? What if part of his brain and soul lived on…in a machine?!? Let us not forget that Avengers: Age of Ultron was also released on May 1st in 2015, and Marvel loves a good callback. I think we figured it out, y’all. Black Panther 2: Age of Killmonger.

This one was almost too easy to suss out. Remember how we last saw Thor and the Guardians in Endgame? Thor and Peter Quill, arguing over who was the captain? I think it’s safe to say that Thor joins the Guardians on their next adventure…and lasts all of 15 minutes before he and Quill start a fistfight—which Thor wins, obvs. This results in Thor hitching a ride in another spaceship, and eventually making his way back to earth. When he learns about Old Man Steve Rogers, Thor steals a ton of Pym Particles (because Hank Pym is un-snapped and back to making them, so it’s not like we need another Time Heist to get some more), and coerces Old Steve into joining him on some quests. Folks, what we get next is basically a cross between Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and Doctor Who: Thor and Old Steve—BFFs for eternity—travel through space, time, and multiverses, to right some wrongs. Hell, even Peggy joins them occasionally (young, middle aged, and old Peggy, it’ll vary)! Hemsworth and Evans clearly have the best time working with each other, so I’m guessing this is the first of at least 5 currently unannounced “T-Hammer and the Shield” movies (whose dates are sadly not part of this list of new Marvel movies coming out).

At this point we are due for a Captain Marvel sequel, and the big question is: will Goose be in it? Sadly, I don’t think the Flerken will have made it to 2024, which brings us to the next big question: when will this movie take place? Will it fill in the gaps of what Carol was up to all those years between inspiring Nick Fury to start the Avenger Initiative and returning to help out the gang after the Snapture? Possibly, but I think a more likely outcome is for Marvel to set the story set in the present day, and keep the stakes small. We know Carol is a badass who can tear spaceships in half, so what happens when she is called upon to save a galactic animal shelter full of flerkens? Carol learns the difficult work of fundraising, doing the most with a small budget, and that not all problems can be solved by punching someone.

It’s been a few years since those who had been Snaptured have been returned, and while this has been mostly great, there have been a few changes to work through. For instance, FBI Agent and Youth Pastor Jimmy Woo is now way better at closeup magic than Scott! But when Agent Woo tries to take his magic game to the next level by following the teachings of an up-and-coming YouTuber, Jason Cragg, Scott notices some odd changes to his best friend’s behavior (A LOT changed with the Snapture, okay?). With the help of Cassie, Scott and Hope track down this mysterious “Voice” who can seemingly command his followers to do whatever he pleases. In the end, it will segue nicely into a new series available on Disney+.
I’m waiting for Disney+ to announce a limited series about Randall Park’s FBI agent/youth pastor from Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Did I forget to mention that at the end of Captain Marvel 2, Carol drops off some rescue animals at a shelter in Jersey City and leaves quite the impression on volunteer there by the name of Kamala Khan? WELL SHE DOES! And now we get the cinematic adaptation of the first few arcs of G. Willow Wilson’s run on Ms. Marvel, starring a Pakistani American muslim teenager, written and directed by a Pakistani American muslim woman and it is PERFECT.

By now it’s nearly been three years since the MCU had a team-up movie, and we are definitely due for one. But you can’t just slap a new team together, call them the New Avengers, and have them come together to save the world from some supervillain—the MCU has moved beyond that now! Instead, we find out what happens when Sam Wilson, aka Captain America, invites his friends Captain Marvel and Old Man Cap to go on a camping trip together. The answer, obviously, is the hit comedy of the summer—IN FEBRUARY! Featuring surprise appearances from our other favorite superheroes, CAMPING WITH THE CAPS (tagline: ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME) will truly be the hangout movie of my our dreams.

Rocket and Groot have paved the way to help the public accept the newest superhero into the MCU: Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl. With the powers of a squirrel AND girl, this movie can follow the recent series by Ryan North and Erica Henderson, exploring how a normal girl (with a squirrel tail) navigates college, new friendships, and defeating supervillains with kindness and butt-kicking. Everyone will fall in love with Tippy Toe! Squirrel Girl will be a blend of live-action and animation, like the old Disney movies, or, you know, the third-act action sequence of previous MCU movies *insert rimshot here*.

You’re sitting there in the dark, the familiar Marvel logo appears on the big screen and that triumphant Marvel music begins to play…and continues as the movie begins with a wide shot over New York, panning through the city, through Queens, and finally zooms in on Peter Parker, who starts singing about the responsibility that comes with being a hero. THAT’S RIGHT, Y’ALL, IT IS FINALLY TIME FOR THE MARVEL MOVIE MUSICAL!!! Will this include a duet about friendship between Rocket & Groot? An “I want” song from Nebula? A melancholy song about being the Never-Christmas-Always-Winter Soldier by Bucky? A song-and-dance number by Carol and Kamala about being the Marvelous Marvels? ALL OF THE ABOVE AND MORE, FRIENDS!
