From New York Times bestseller Tess Gerritsen and acclaimed thriller writer Gary Braver comes a sexy murder mystery about a reckless affair and dangerous secrets.

Taryn Moore is young, beautiful, and brilliant…so why would she kill herself? When Detective Frankie Loomis arrives on the scene to investigate the girl’s fatal plunge from her apartment balcony, she knows in her gut there’s more to the story. Her instincts are confirmed when surprise information is revealed that could have been reason enough for Taryn’s suicide—or a motive for her murder.

To English professor Jack Dorian, Taryn was the ultimate fantasy: intelligent, adoring, and completely off limits. But there was also a dark side to Taryn, a dangerous streak that threatened those she turned her affections to—including Jack. And now that she’s dead, his problems are just beginning.

After Frankie uncovers a trove of sordid secrets, it becomes clear that Jack may know the truth. He is guilty of deception, but is he capable of cold-blooded murder?

Review

“A seamless collaboration between authors Tess Gerritsen and Gary Braver…this is a seductive shapeshifter of a novel, full of flashbacks and revelations.” The Wall Street Journal

“With deceitful characters and plenty of twists, this novel is highly recommended for fans of Gerritsen or Braver, and readers who love suspense stories.” Library Journal (starred review)

“An emotionally charged page-turner that will definitely keep readers guessing, Choose Me has all of the twists and turns in the right places. Gerritsen and Braver are definitely the co-writing dynamic duo to look out for!” Mystery & Suspense Magazine

“In just 320 pages, Gerritsen and Braver manage to weave a tale so sordid, so shocking, that you can’t stop reading. Whether you need a solid beach read this summer or you need something for a long flight or road trip, Choose Me is the perfect choice.” Culturess

“Pop culture-wise, Choose Me packs the same wallop as films like Body Heat and Fatal Attraction. At heart, though, it’s also a kind of throwback to the brilliant work of James M. Cain in books like Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice. Labels aside, this is flat-out great reading entertainment.” The Providence Journal

“Tess Gerritsen and Gary Braver win my vote for offering the most disturbing novel of the summer, crafting the story of an affair that leads to murder…[A]n unsettling tragedy that will claim you until the last page.” The Mountain Times

“These veteran mystery novelists have a few new tricks up their sleeves.” Toronto Star

Choose Me is a whirlwind with sharp, fluid prose and fine depth of character, telling an age-old story with powerful and timely relevancy. Told from alternating perspectives, the story is chilly, creepy, nuanced, layered, a puzzler of the first order, and—above all—poignant. This story will hit home for many. Gerritsen and Braver really nailed this one.” —David Baldacci, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“A spellbinding mystery. Gerritsen and Braver’s expert storytelling is on full display.” —Karin Slaughter, New York Times and #1 international bestselling author

“Don’t miss this edgy, twisting, rocket-paced story of marriage, betrayal, and the damage we do to each other in the name of love.” —Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of Confessions on the 7:45

From the Publisher

Along with readers the world over, I’ve been a longtime fan of the page-turning, deeply engrossing novels of both Tess Gerritsen and Gary Braver. To say I was excited when I learned these two formidable writers had joined forces on a new story is an understatement! I’m even more thrilled to confirm that Choose Me is both a riveting tale of obsession and a suspenseful murder mystery—everything I’d hoped for from this partnership.

From the first pages, we know this much: Taryn Moore is dead. But although her death appears to be suicide, nothing about Taryn’s life was as it seems. Why should her death be any different?

Through flashbacks told from multiple viewpoints and clues uncovered by Detective Frankie Loomis, we begin to fit together the jagged pieces of Taryn’s life and the dangerous entanglements—including a passionate and consequential affair with her mentor, Professor Jack Dorian—that might have led to her untimely end.

With
Choose Me, Gerritsen and Braver have created the most satisfying of suspense stories, where the lines between victim and villain are tantalizingly blurred.

4.5 stars (great crime novel!)
Wow! I enjoyed this book so much more than I thought it would! Normally I don’t read detective type thrillers because they just don’t interest me as much but this one worked so well! It’s a scandalous murder mystery/crime novel about a forbidden affair that leads to murder! There are twists, turns, and enough suspense to keep you riveted! This book is honestly a nonstop thrill ride, and I didn’t want to put it down! Sure, I had a few ideas as to who the killer was (and I was actually RIGHT when it was revealed in the end) but everything leading up to the reveal was so intriguing that I couldn’t stop reading. AH! I am so glad I took a chance on a new to me author (yup, I’ve never read a Tess Gerritsen book before) and I’m looking forward to reading many more in the future. So, the book starts off with what appears to be a suicide but the notion of this slowly starts to unravel as one detective suspects there is more to the story than meets the eye. Frankie is a fantastic detective, and her instincts are spot on (if you enjoy police procedural type novels, you’ll love her). She knows that a college student with uneaten food in the microwave, textbooks open on a desk, and a missing cell phone don’t equal suicide and decides to look a little deeper into the victim’s life. What she finds isn’t what she thought it would… An affair between a college student and professor? An obsessive relationship? And honestly, so much more! This book alternates between Tarryn’s, Frankie’s (the detective), and Jack’s point of views. Readers are able to get an in depth look at all the players and how everything starts and finishes. It’s an impressive read because it does go back and forth (before and after death) and gives us a lot of insight as to how everything happened. What lead up to the death, how everyone is involved, and even a few twists and turns readers won’t be expecting. It’s an overall fascinating and hard to put down read! I definitely recommend it to those who enjoy crime novels!𝗠𝗬 𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4.5 rounded up to 5)

Taryn Moore is found dead on the sidewalk in front of her apartment. At first glance, the police believe she jumped from her fifth story balcony, but the more Detective Frankie Loomis investigates, the more doubts she has that this is a suicide. Taryn is young, attractive, and smart; she had every reason to live, so why would she kill herself? As new evidence comes to light, it becomes clear that this wasn’t a suicide. Now the question is, who would want her dead?

English professor Jack Dorian, Taryn’s professor, thinks she is one of the most talented and beautiful students he has ever had, the fact that she adores him doesn’t hurt. He is in a hard place with his marriage and the attention is nice. But when Taryn turns up dead, he is one of the first suspects and realizes he has gotten in way over his head. Detective Frankie Loomis works to uncover the secrets and solve the case before anyone else gets hurt.

Tess Gerritsen is a good go-to thriller author for me. If I want a good mystery with plenty of suspense, I know I won’t be disappointed with one of her books. The book goes back and forth between before and after giving readers a look at Taryn and what lead to her death. Each back and forth gave me a little more insight into the characters and kept me guessing as to what actually happened. By the time I got to the final few chapters, I was very pleased with how the story played out. Frankie is a great lead character as a detective and gives a sense of purpose in trying to solve the case. Her partner had a hard time believing her instincts, that it wasn’t just a suicide, but Frankie followed her instincts and used every clue she could find to get to the bottom of it. I loved her tenacity and heart for those she was trying to help. Taryn is a very interesting character that I couldn’t help but connect with. In all her struggles, she spirals out of control a little more and with each new struggle she becomes more and more interesting for the readers. I enjoyed this story and read it in a day and recommend it to those that enjoy a good police procedural, crime drama.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.

Choose Me is unlike other thrillers I've read. In fact, I consider more along the lines of women's fiction, bordering on literary fiction. Because it's really more about the character arcs than the whodunit. Although... the mystery of what happened to Taryn Moore is extremely compelling and makes it hard to put the book down.

I agree with a lot of the low ratings where people didn't care for the victim. I absolutely couldn't stand her. Taryn, the 'victim', needed serious psychological help. She needed an intervention. She needed an in-patient program. She should not have been walking the streets ruining lives. And I didn't agree with the authors' final take-away message about her either. But still... this book was so well-written and I don't need to agree with the authors' ideas about feminism to give this a fair rating. It was a taut thriller that had me riveted for the few hours I needed to read it.

I've read a lot of Tess Gerritsen books. Now I'm going to see what else Gary Braver has written. And I hope these two have / will have more collaborations. Also, I'm going to bet here that Gerritsen was the genius behind that autopsy scene. She's the only author that makes me feel like I'm in attendance for these things. Take that as a warning and skim that scene if you're squeamish.

The other is that she is a mother of twins at a similar age and as parent she feels that something is amiss “A parent’s job never really ends. Even if she lives to be a hundred, her sixty-something daughters will still be keeping her awake at night.”. So she starts investigating and retracing the girl’s life.
