An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller.

From Dean Koontz, the master of suspense, comes an epic thriller about a terrifying killer and the singular compassion it will take to defeat him.

“Canine or human, it is hard to find a more lovable character in fiction than Kipp. Devoted has every mark of a classic.” —Associated Press

Woody Bookman hasn’t spoken a word in his eleven years of life. Not when his father died in a freak accident. Not when his mother, Megan, tells him she loves him. For Megan, keeping her boy safe and happy is what matters. But Woody believes a monstrous evil was behind his father’s death and now threatens him and his mother. And he’s not alone in his thoughts. An ally unknown to him is listening.

A uniquely gifted dog with a heart as golden as his breed, Kipp is devoted beyond reason to people. When he hears the boy who communicates like he does, without speaking, Kipp knows he needs to find him before it’s too late.

Woody’s fearful suspicions are taking shape. A man driven by a malicious evil has set a depraved plan into motion. And he’s coming after Woody and his mother. The reasons are primal. His powers are growing. And he’s not alone. Only a force greater than evil can stop what’s coming next.

I think it is up to you to read it and decide for yourself. Writing a review seems to cheat you out of finding out about the story. Okay, I’ll say this, loved the dog, hated the killer.

All fans of Koontz know of his deep affection for dogs. The heart-felt assessment of their loyalty, intelligence, and honesty in this novel—and the exciting forecast of the future of the ancient human-canine relationship—excels the treatment of the subject in any of the author’s other novels I have read. It is, of course, counterbalanced by an equally powerful threat to humanity. This conflict might be suggested by the title “New World Impending,” although “Devoted” also makes sense. Koontz’s abhorrence of deceit and brutality, his distrust of what we might call “The System” or simply Corruption fuels the plot, and his persistent optimism irradiates the conclusion.

His style, although as lively and urbane as usual, does demonstrate some of his editorial weaknesses as well. He commits an occasional error of diction: “. . . she had never been completely known to him, not down to the deepest roots of her psychology. . . .” The word “psychology” means the study of the mind, not the mind itself. He is also especially wary of using the preposition “like.” He prefers wordy substitutes like “. . . clever ways to communicate, similar to what Dorothy had arranged. . . .” or the peculiar (antiquated) use of “as” instead of “like”: “He had been as a child to Dorothy.” Presumably, one motive for this mannerism is that he fears using “like” as a conjunction, and yet more than once he makes this blunder: “. . . vanished much like Dracula, in those old movies, swirled his cape and became a bat and was gone” and “Sheriff Hayden Eckman felt his world fragmenting just like Thad Fenton’s skull had been cracked into pieces and pried apart.”

His mistakes in grammar are infrequent and follow no pattern, as in these two quotations, on adjacent pages: “Roger Austin, whom [correct] she knew to be an early riser . . .” and “. . . lawmen, whom [for “who”] he knew for certain were not corrupt. . . .” He once fails to make subject agree with verb: “. . . as was Vulcan and Bella and Kipp. . . .” And he is unreliable when it comes to distinguishing the verbs “lie / lay / lain” and “lay / laid / laid.” He gets it right 90% of the time, as in “. . . while the spirit of Woody lay [past of “lie”] abashed . . .” and “. . . a faint golden arc lay [past of “lie”] across floor and furniture. . . .” However, out of the blue we get “He circled and laid down and closed his eyes” [for “lay,” the past of “lie”].

One might best blame Koontz’s editor, however, for most of these slight faults, and they can all be forgiven for the sake of the splendid narrative, characterization, and hope that make this novel a joy to read.

This distressing but imaginative novel has many good, bad, and ugly elements. Ugh! Written for maximum shock value, the crafty storyline will have you guessing on every page. This transhumanist plotline has several interacting storylines filled with vivid characters, you'll either love or hate. Lots of conflicting motives. The advanced technology and scifi elements are largely believable and yet disconcerting enough to make this a suspenseful thriller. Wow!

Make sure you complete each of the three larger sections in once sitting. There's lots to absorb, but this is not a book to read over too many days. Ugh!

I liked the author's focused and fast-paced narrative, although I found some story elements ghastly and repulsive because of their evil characterizations and inhumane actions or attitudes. However, reading this book is a nightmare experience that will have you questioning the genius depravity of the author's mind, while wondering how you got caught on this terrifying reading journey that cannot end fast enough. Yikes!

Not sure I can take on another book like this one. Still, it raises lots of worthwhile questions for discussion. The well-written storytelling is captivating and compelling. For a book club, it might prove to be an engaging catalyst for lively debates---but only for the strong hearted.

Without the underlying autistic-savaunt child and interactive dog elements, I most likely would not have finished the book.

The Audible narration eased my reading experience trauma, while helping with appropriate pacing and character personalities.

The ending seemed a little abrupt and unfinished, but I welcomed it nonetheless! Whew!!

I could NOT get enough Dean Koontz when I was in high school! It was time to revisit my youth by catching this title by the “literary juggler.” Devoted did not disappoint! Short chapters, but a lot of them, Devoted unfolded with constant characters. You have a non verbal autistic boy and his widowed mother; you have a golden retriever who just lost his owner; you have a crazed head of a suspect business; various cops; the list goes on and on. All of the characters become intertwined. Murders: 10 is where I lost count. Heroes: at least 6 main ones. A crazed bad guy you hate right from the first chapter, you follow him on his biological transformation and unraveling. He is after a certain character. He does find her, but she is able to fight him off. Her autistic son who is trapped in his own mind is trying to solve his father’s untimely death, and his genius gets him targeted on the dark web. Who will save them all? Who will stop the madman? Better yet, what will happen to Kipp, the golden retriever who starts the novel by losing his beloved owner, Dorothy? You definitely do not have time to get bored with this one. If you slightly glaze over some details, Koontz introduces a new character and ties them into the plot. Expect the unexpected, as always in one of his novels. I do think the novel ended abruptly by giving a quick snapshot of how all of the good characters fared. But I take nothing away from the story. It was a worthy read!

5.0 out of 5 stars The classic Koontz is back!
Reviewed in Germany on April 18, 2020
The classic Koontz is back! It has been five years since he released a standalone story. The last was "Ashley Bell" in 2015, also worth it. In the meantime, he wrote the thriller series about Jane Hawk, but it never really charmed me. "Devoted", on the other hand, is the kind of book that makes me want to reread his entire oeuvre.

Those who know Koontz's books from the 80s and 90s will see a lot of them in this new story. We have the damsel in distress, of course very beautiful, who accidentally meets her knight in shining armor, obviously a guy with a military background who knows how to handle things, like Nora and Travis in "Watchers" (and there are more similarities with this book that fans will enjoy discovering as they read). We have a clever child with a disability, such as Regina in "Hideaway", but he's also a bit like Barty in "From the Corner of His Eye" and Milo in "Relentless". We have a villain whose science experiment fails and transforms him, like Eric Leben in "Shadowfires" and Thomas Shaddack in "Midnight". And of course we also have a dog, like Einstein in "Watchers", and Woofer in "Dragon Tears".

You might think, "But then you've read all of this before, right?" And yes, the book follows the old familiar formula, it is more a combination of already used elements than an original story. Koontz also applies his own style. Many chapters start with a short placement of the characters without using verbs, which I find very cool but which I always have to adjust in my own Creative Writing lessons. Everything is told from the third person past tense, except the chapters of the villain, where Koontz uses the present tense. A technique that he has been applying for years and that provides extra dynamism. The story takes place in two days. What I love about the graphic design is that the book consists of four main parts. Part one starts with a title page with a microscopic image of cells. With each subsequent part we zoom out until we actually get the tree that is also on the cover.

Despite the familiar elements, the story is exciting, definitely fresh, perhaps a little less humorous than we are used to, perhaps a little too preachy than what many people, who are fans of the old Koontz but dropped out in the last decade, would like . But it all works for me personally. Maybe it's because of the nostalgia, and sometimes I just need something familiar. I am already looking forward to his next book, "Elsewhere", to be released in late November.
