Soothe Your Soul With These Pictures of Books and Leaves

Claire Handscombe moved from Europe to DC in 2012, ostensibly to study for an MFA in Creative Writing, but actually – let’s be honest – because of an obsession with The West Wing. She is the author of Unscripted, a novel about a young woman with a celebrity crush and a determined plan, and the editor of Walk With Us: How The West Wing Changed Our Lives. She also hosts the Brit Lit Podcast, a fortnightly show of news and views from British books and publishing. Blog: the Brit Lit Blog. Twitter: @BookishClaire

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers,” Anne Shirley once exclaimed – she of the Green Gables – and she’s not the only one. Although autumn isn’t everyone’s favourite season for reading, there’s something about cozying under blankets on chillier days with a hot chocolate and a soothing read that definitely appeals. And it’s a Bookstagrammer’s paradise, too – pictures of books on beaches replaced by pictures of books amid leaves and golden scenery. Since we can all use more calming beauty in our lives, I’ve picked out a few  of my recent favourites for you.

I love the subtle nuances in this leaf’s colours – and that the books aren’t the feature, and yet we are comforted by their presence.

Love this Nicholas Sparks quote – and the creativity of making it float in coffee!

Fall in the U.S. is, I have learned, incomplete without a pumpkin…or several.

“Don't be cautious. Be careful,' she reminds me. Cautious people are afraid of the unknown and avoid it. Careful people plan so that they're more confident when they face the unknown” – Jenn Bennett, Starry Eyes • It’s almost the weekend!🍁I’ve been feeling under the weather and just been flipping some of my favourite contemporary books☺️ technically reread one late into the night last night, and that has only made me want to read some more!🙈 • #bookishfall #bookish #bookstagram #bookshelves #autumnvibes #autumnbooks #bookishautumn #bookaesthetic #readmorebooks #bookstoread #toberead #currentlyreading #currentreads #bookstagrammer #booksandscarf #booksandleaves #contenporary #ycontemporary #bookish #bookishmerch #booksandcandles #bookquotes #booklove #yabookstagram #katiemcgarry #jennbennett #brigidkemmerer #sayyoullrememberme #letterstothelost #starryeyes #booksandpumpkins

“Anoshe was a word for strangers in the street, and lovers between meetings, for parents and children, friends and family. It softened the blow of leaving. Eased the strain of parting. A careful nod to the certainty of today, the mystery of tomorrow. When a friend left, with little chance of seeing home, they said anoshe. When a loved one was dying, they said anoshe. When corpses were burned, bodies given back to the earth and souls to the stream, those left grieving said anoshe. Anoshe brought solace. And hope. And the strength to let go.” • Long quote, but I couldn’t cut any part out!😍 This series is one I adore and will never tire of, because I can’t get enough! Now my collection is complete, I’ve got all the special editions and a reread is soon to come!😆❤️ • #bookishfall #bookish #bookstagram #bookshelves #autumnvibes #autumnbooks #bookishautumn #bookaesthetic #readmorebooks #bookstoread #toberead #currentlyreading #currentreads #bookstagrammer #booksandscarf #booksandleaves #fantasy #yafantasy #bookish #bookishmerch #booksandcandles #bookquotes #booklove #yabookstagram #bookquotes #veschwab #victoriaschwab #adsom #adarkershadeofmagic #agatheringofshadows #aconjuringoflight #lilabard

Look, there’s a leaf in this one, okay? And lots of other fall things. It still counts as a leaf pic. And look how pretty…

QUESTION: What are some of your most anticipated releases of November? ☕️🍁 • Happy Tuesday everyone! We are only 4 days away from November (and 58 days until Christmas in case anyone is counting haha 🎄). One of my most anticipated release is Queen of Nothing by @blackholly because I NEED to know what happens next to Cardan and Jude! Counting down the days until then. • It’s getting pretty chilly in my area, so stay warm everyone! . . . . #book #bookstagram #bookblog #mybookfeatures #yalit #bookworms #blogger #bookblogger #bookish #bookishfeatures #bookishmerch #booksofinstagram #flatlayjournal #flatlaystyle #flatlaysquad #newreleases #sweaterweather #coffeelover #catlovers #hyggelife #bookalicious #fallvibes
