Calling For Comics
Welcome to Episode 2! This episode focuses on recommendation questions about comics and graphic novels (with bonus Books About Books and Books About Asia questions). ERGO, I brought on Ardo Omer, comics expert to the max, to be this week’s co-host. Ardo is a contributor at Panels and a senior writer at Women Write About Comics. She started out as a book blogger before expanding into writing about comics and television. When she’s not imagining her home of Toronto as Gotham 2.0, she’s obsessing over K-Pop and Jdramas. Follow her on Twitter @ArdoOmer.
This episode is sponsored by Under the Udala Trees by Chinelo Okparanta and Penguin Random House Audiobooks.

Questions!
Hey All (but mostly Amanda)!
I love the idea of a new recommendations podcast and I cannot wait to listen to it with the same fervor as I already do the BookRiot Podcast and All the Books!
My good friend and I have decided to make 2016 our year of reading as many lady books as humanly possible. I’m a bit obsessive and I read about 150 books a year, so I started a list of titles months ago. We want to hit on as many styles and genres as possible, one of which that we don’t have too much experience in is graphic novels (or comics). We’re already planning on reading Persepolis and I already read the new Ms. Marvel, Lumberjanes, and Nimona, but that’s around where my lady graphic novel/comics knowledge stops. We’re open to most anything (as long as it’s chock full of great lady characters), and I especially like stories that are a bit out there and stories that make me laugh.
Thanks so much for everything you do!
-Taylor
Dear Get Booked,
This is for Amanda’s upcoming recommendation podcast. I am new to graphic novels/comic books and don’t know where to start/continue. I LOVED Saga by Brian k. Vaughn. I have read lumberjanes which I liked as well but I don’t know what to get next.
Thank you,
-Sha’ron
Dear Get Booked,
Books (including comics and graphic novels) by authors that identify as queer?
-Janani
Hello All,
I’m wondering if you can recommend any graphic novels in the sci-fi/fantasy genres with strong female characters? I’d love to get some recommendations as I begin to dive into the world of graphic novels!
Thanks!
-Lee
Hey Amanda.
Thanks so much for putting together this podcast. I cannot wait for the first episode. I’m looking for some recommendations to add to my ever growing TBR list. I eat up any book I can find that centers on a bookshop, library or book within the book. Recent favorites included Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore (Sloan), The Borrower (Makkai – OMG love her), and the Rabbit Back Literature Society (Jaaskelainen). Oh, I just started The Library at Mount Char (wow!). Do you have any other gems in mind that I might have missed? Thanks Amanda – you rock.
Hi Amanda,
I’m going to be traveling to Asia in October. Part of the time will be on a cruise and part of the time will be traveling around on our own. We will be spending a few days in Hong Kong, possibly Macau, Sanya (part of Hainan Island in China), Saigon, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Seoul.
Of all these places, I’ve only been to Hong Kong before and that was only for a 24 hour layover. I’d love to get some fiction and non-fiction recommendations for these countries and the specific cities. I’m more interested in getting a feel for the places as they are today than historical books. I’ve already read Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians and China Rich Girlfriends which takes place mostly in Singapore.
What else should I read?
Thanks so much!
-Alison
