Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Jenn Northington

Director, Editorial Operations

Jenn Northington has worked in the publishing industry wearing various hats since 2004, including bookseller and events director, and is currently Director of Editorial Operations at Riot New Media Group. You can hear her on the SFF Yeah! podcast nerding out about sci-fi and fantasy. When she’s not working, she’s most likely gardening, running, or (obviously) reading. Some days are dark with a side of gloomy; some weeks, every day might as well be a Monday. And during those times, you need your friends beside you — to find you a kitten picture, text you a joke, take you out for ice cream, to remind you that there is fun in this world! So let’s all take a break from the serious and have some fun. Let me introduce you to my friends Jem & the Holograms, The Lumberjanes, and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. They can be your friends too!

Lumberjanes#14Lumberjanes: When adult life is just too humdrum, I spend time with Molly, Mal, Ripley, April, Jo, and Jen. They’ve got puns aplenty; they’ve got badges to earn; they’ve got riddles to crack, mysteries to solve, Yetis to bribe with cookies. They’ve got occasional trips to lost worlds! They’ve got crushes and a pet raccoon and plans with code-names. They have got SO. MANY. HUGS. They also have diverse and broad-ranging interests, backgrounds, identities, hair styles, and skills. Some days, I summon April’s strength; some days it’s Molly’s loyalty. Other days I remind myself that even Mal has anxiety; or I go full-on Jen-protective on behalf of my friends. Sometimes my brain is in full strategy mode like Jo, and sometimes I have had so much caffeine and/or sugar that I am Ripley. And don’t let their fun-loving ways fool you! It’s useful, too. They once fixed a potentially-apocalyptic power struggle with kittens, for Aleen Cust’s sake.

JemJem & the Holograms: Does your day need more sparkle in it? The Holograms can help you with that! Sure, these girls have problems. Star-crossed love, stage-fright, an evil-driven nemesis band, a competition to win. But you know what they have got? Neon hair color and power make-up! A hologram system to help take their music to the next level! And so much talent and heart. Whether it’s Kimber’s exuberance, Aja’s know-how, Shana’s level-headedness, or Jerrica’s creativity — where there is a will, there’s a way, and these girls will not only find a way but rock the world while they’re at it. And I defy you not to throw yourself a dance party whilst reading these comics.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel Girl, Squirrel Girl! She’s got an earwormy theme song you’ll be humming for days! She’s got nutty puns (see what I did there), and an actual squirrel sidekick named Tippy Toe. She’s got a smart and deadpan roommate named Nancy, who has a cat named Mew. Are you not excited yet? Well she’s also written by Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics, which means that the Marvel Universe just got a whole lot more hilarious. Whether she’s tweeting at Iron Man, or befriending Galactus, or saving people trapped in the Statue of Liberty by a giant dinosaur, or tackling her first semester at college, Doreen knows how to turn a frown upside down. AND THEN MAKE A JOKE ABOUT NUTS.
