Casting Ms. Marvel: Hey, a Girl’s Gotta Dream!
On the heels of our post dreamcasting Carol Danvers in the Captain Marvel movie, we wanted to tackle something a little more out there in the ether: dreamcasting Kamala Khan in her movie cameo. No, before you get your hopes up, this cameo hasn’t been announced or even hinted at. But we like to dream, and since we love pretty much everything about Ms. Marvel, I thought I’d take a stab at it.
This wasn’t easy because there aren’t a lot of young female South Asian actors out there, and because Ms. Marvel’s Pakistani Muslim heritage is so crucial to who she is, I felt it was important to stay in that range. So, I hopped, skipped, and jumped across the world to from London to Karachi to Bollywood and back to Hollywood, and this is what I came up with.
Alia Bhatt is a 21-year-old Indian actress who is just breaking out on the Bollywood scene. She’s a great age for the role and seems to have a sense of humor that would fit Kamala nicely!
Sanam Jung is a 26-year-old Pakistani TV actress, and while she might be a bit older than Kamala, she might just be able to pull it off. Also that facial expression in the picture? CLASSIC Kamala Khan.
Naomi Scott is a British half-Indian actress who was born in London, but made it big when she was discovered by the Disney Channel UK. She was introduced to American audiences in the short-lived show Terra Nova. Naomi’s the right age, at 21, and probably has the acting experience and knowledge of Hollywood to make it work.
Summer Bishil, a 26-year-old actress, is of South Asian descent, but was born in Pasadena, so she won’t have a problem nailing Kamala’s Jersey City accent. She was also on quite a few young-actresses-to-watch lists a few years ago, so she’s probably got the acting chops to make it work.
Zendaya is a half white, half black actress working in Hollywood, but she could definitely play Kamala Khan. Also, she’s only 19, which is the closest to Kamala’s age we’ve come yet!
I’d also like to submit myself for consideration. I come with the costume and I’m DELIGHTFUL to work with.
Any other ideas? Post ’em in the comments!!
