At Long Last, Marvel and Disney VFX Workers Ratify First Union Contract
Hello there, and welcome to the first digest post of June! Here are some of the latest newsmakers from the world of comics.
News From DC and Marvel
- Disney and Marvel’s VFX workers now have a union contract for the first time, hopefully bringing an end to the horror stories about underpaid, overworked employees being subjected to harassment and last-minute additions to their workloads.
- Writer Peter David, best known for his work on titles like Incredible Hulk and X-Factor, passed away on May 25 after several years of struggling with multiple health issues. As I write this, the family’s GoFundMe is still up, so consider pitching in to cover his final medical bills, if you can.
- Marvel has done a big reshuffle on their upcoming films, including pushing back the next two Avengers movies.
- Speaking of reshuffling, EA Games continues to lay off employees and cancel projects, including a Black Panther video game. An unspecified new game is in the works to replace the canceled game.
- Entertainment Weekly revealed the first match-up fans can expect in the upcoming DC/Marvel crossover comics.
- Agatha All Along and Daredevil: Born Again were among the most-watched shows of 2024.
- If you’re eagerly anticipating Born Again‘s next season, you now have a new reason to get excited: Krysten Ritter is returning at Jessica Jones.
- Danny DeVito and Colin Farrell had a chat about what it was like playing the Penguin (and some other stuff).
News From the Wider Comics World
- The trailer for One Piece Season 2 dropped!
- The sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has been delayed until September 2027.
- Fans of underground cartoonist Denis Kitchen still have time to get in on the Kickstarter campaign backing a documentary on his life and career.
- Now that Penguin Random House has acquired BOOM! Studios, they’re being a lot stingier about sharing BOOM! comics with libraries, meaning that their titles are no longer available through the Comics Plus service. Boo.
- Paramount Pictures’ former CEO revealed that the set of the 1980 Popeye film adaptation was the “most coked-up film set” he’d ever been on.
- The fallout from Diamond’s bankruptcy continues, as Udon Entertainment is no longer shipping manga through that distribution service.
