This week’s episode, Scars, was all about trust. Trusting the wrong people can get you an I.C.E.R. in the head but not trusting the right person can start a war. The pressure! Don’t worry because I’ve got all of the trust exercises you need to understand the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Since this episode does appear after the opening weekend of Avengers: Age of Ultron, there will be things that refer to the movie. If you want to see the spoilers, then highlight the white text.

Agents of SHIELD. Season 2 Episode 20: Scars. Phil Coulson. Clark Gregg.Don’t Keep Your Friends Close: It seems like Team S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t trust their director. He’s too close to Skye to assess the situation…or is he? Would things have been different if Coulson trusted himself to put S.H.I.E.L.D. first? I do know that lying to your team about financing the recontruction of a new hellicarrier that was eventually used to help evacuate civilians at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron can put a dent in the whole trust thing.

Agents of SHIELD. Season 2 Episode 20: Scars. Melinda May. Ming-Na Wen.Keep Your Friends Close: I know I just said not to keep your friends close but if Coulson had chosen to keep May in the loop about the theta protocol, I think she would trust him more so than she does not. Maybe then things would have turned out differently.

Agents of SHIELD. Season 2 Episode 20: Scars. Alphonso 'Mack' Mackenzie. Henry Simmons.Blue Blood is a No-No: It’s not exactly fair to ask Coulson to not have Kree blood in his system since it brought him back to life but that seems to be a major trust hang up for Mack. It was weird to see Mack go for that reason since he can do more good making sure Coulson doesn’t go off creating crop circles and staring to space but blue is just not his colour. Now he’s a go-go away from S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agents of SHIELD. Season 2 Episode 20: Scars. Agent 33. Maya Stojan.Friends Don’t Let Friends Hand Over Friends To Hydra: Well, we’re not exactly sure what Bobbi did to Agent 33 while undercover at Hydra but whatever it was, it lured her away from the group and caused her to get an ICER to the face by Ward. Maybe if Bobbi had been a bit more honest in her role at Hydra and not had waited until Agent 33 remembered. Maybe even apologize with your standard “I was undercover and it was the good of the word” that agents give. Who knows? Maybe that would have helped (unlikely).

Agents of SHIELD. Season 2 Episode 20: Scars. Robert Gonzales. Edward James Olmos. In Gonzales We (Should’ve) Trust More: Let’s be honest. We totally thought Gonzales was going to be the anti-Coulson with his fear of the super powered and thought he’d be trigger happy with the Inhumans but alas, we were wrong! Gonzales seemed like a reasonable guy but bit the dust all the same from our lack of trust as well as Jiaying’s.

jiayingWhat Looks Like A Hydra Duck, Isn’t A Hydra Duck: I would have liked to see Jiaying actually try to be diplomatic but her distrust in S.H.I.E.L.D after her experience with Hydra clouded her judgement. I totally get it. S.H.I.E.L.D. wants to index you. It might not be during Coulson’s reign as director but some S.H.I.E.L.D higher up will exploit that. It’s a slippery slope but that’s where comes in. Trust in the current S.H.I.E.L.D or at least trust in her fellow Inhumans who she’s going to manipulate into going to war.

Agents of SHIELD. Season 2 Episode 20: Scars. Raina. Ruth Negga. The Cassandra Effect: How do you trust someone who’s known to be manipulative but who can also see the future? Like Cassandra, no one believed Raina’s premonition and now everyone is paying for it. A war is coming to Westeros…erm, S.H.I.E.L.D and the Inhumans are at the other end of it. The finale is going to be an interesting ride.

So what’s the moral of this episode? Don’t let the person who was tortured by Hydra and is Skye’s mother be the one to negotiate with S.H.I.E.L.D. Also, an ICER in the head looks very painful.
