8 GAME OF THRONES Spotify Playlists to Celebrate the Final Season
The wait is over. The final season of Game of Thrones has arrived. If you’re a longtime reader of the original books by George R.R. Martin, you might have thought this day would never come. I first read A Game of Thrones, the first novel in GRRM’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, in the early 2000s. Let me be honest. When years passed after A Dance with Dragons released and no Winds of Winter was to be seen, I genuinely made peace with the fact that I might never see an ending. That GRRM may leave the series unfinished. No shade. Seriously. It’s a risk readers face with long series—especially of the big, fat fantasy kind.
Season 8 of the Game of Thrones television series changes that. We will finally get an ending. And while it’s in TV form versus prose, with all the changes and divergences that means, I won’t complain. Because I need to know how this all ends in some shape or form. If you’re like me, you might want to celebrate this occasion. If you’re like me, you might want to celebrate with music. If you’re like me, you might want music that’s Game of Thrones related. Thankfully, we’re covered. There are several curated Game of Thrones Spotify playlists for us to choose from.
To start us off is The End Is Coming. A dramatic Game of Thrones Spotify playlist to mark the end of a dramatic series. It’s great one to play during a watching party before a new episode airs.
What’s noteworthy about this playlist is that it’s curated by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and according to them, the secret of the series’s ending is hidden in the track list. Can you figure it out?
For the most part, however, the rest of the Game of Thrones Spotify playlists are built from the scores Ramin Djawadi composes for the show. They make great background music for when you’re working, especially if you need ambient noise to concentrate but find songs with lyrics distracting. What I especially find interesting is that Spotify’s playlists are themed around the Houses. We may not yet know who will sit on the Iron Throne in the end, but you can at least choose your favorite playlist.
House Stark: I have a soft spot for the Starks. Sansa and Arya are my favorites, and I want them to survive all this. I don’t know if that’s in the cards, but I’d like it to be true!
House Lannister: Love them or hate them, the Lannisters have been serious players since the very beginning. And Cersei’s masterful plan at the end of Season 6 remains one of the most memorable moments in the entire series.
House Baratheon: I admit I’m a little surprised to see a curated playlist for House Baratheon. Silly, I know, since they’re a significant house. Robert Baratheon’s rebellion set so many things into motion. The war resulted in Daenerys growing up an exile across the sea. It meant Jon grew up not knowing who his true parents were. And, to be fair, Robert’s brothers Stannis and Renly played key roles earlier in the series.
House Targaryen: Speaking of Daenerys, of course there’s a Game of Thrones Spotify playlist for her house. How could there not be? From being sold into marriage as a child bride (in the books anyway; I know they changed that in the TV show) to sailing triumphantly across the seas to claim her perceived birthright, Daenerys has always been a major player.
The Great Houses: There are other houses beyond the main four mentioned above. I’ve always been a big fan of House Martell—although perhaps not so much the TV version—and House Tyrell. RIP, Lady Olenna.
The Night’s Watch: At the start of the series, we’re made to understand that the Night’s Watch is a shadow of its former self. What would they say now in the final season? Yikes.
The White Walkers: We may have learned the origin of the White Walkers, but do we actually know their ultimate goal? Is it just to conquer? Or is there another reason? Hopefully, we’ll find out in Season 8.
A Special Bonus: This isn’t a playlist as much as it is a song: Florence + The Machine’s rendition of “Jenny of Oldstones,” which was sung by Daniel Portman (as Podrick) in S8E2.
