Forbes Announces the Highest-Paid Authors of 2017

Forbes recently posted a gallery of the World’s Highest-Paid Authors 2017. These 11 authors combined sold over 30 million volumes in the U.S. and earned a pre-tax total income over $312.5 million in the past twelve months. This income is not only from book sales, but total income for the year, which makes it no surprise that J.K. Rowling tops the list at $95 million. It includes profits from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and the Wizarding World attractions at the Universal Studios theme parks. Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson) and Danielle Steel (The Duchess) tied at $11 million for the 10th place spot, being narrowly beat out by E. L. James (Fifty Shades of Grey) at $11.5 million.

Three authors who dropped off the list from 2016 are George R. R. Martin (A Game of Thrones), John Green (The Fault in Our Stars), and Veronica Roth (Divergent). Spoiler: If you’re looking for any authors of color, you won’t find them on this year’s list.
