Staff Writer

Sonja resides in Asheville, NC where she has a job she loves at a children’s nonprofit.  When she’s not working, she probably has a book or comic in hand as she tries to read her way out of the ever-growing stack in her small apartment.  On weekends, she’s probably clambering through the mountains with her husband and dog or trying to eat too much cake while watching Great British Bake Off.

If you’re a gamer, then you MIGHT have heard about this game called Horizon: Zero Dawn. It has a badass lady hero, tribes of ferocious warrior women, and ROBOT DINOSAURS!!! (Robot. Dinosaurs). So, I am definitely going to playing this as a destresser at the end of long days.  If you’re excited (like me) about robot dinosaurs, and you want to match your comics reading to your game playing, then here are a couple of suggestions:

Cover by Amy Reeder

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur by Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder

Well, there’s a dinosaur here, but more than that, it features an amazing protagonist named Lunella Lafayette. She’s confident in her abilities, extremely smart, and she’s more than up to the challenge of partnering with a giant dinosaur.  One of the things that makes me excited about Zero Dawn is the fact that it features a lady protagonist in a big adventure video game, which isn’t as common as I would like it to be, so I think reading about a clever, competent girl who is saving her neighborhood through her partnership with a giant red dinosaur is right up that alley.

Age of Reptiles by Ricardo Delgado

I mean, this one is obvious. There’s not a lot of text here, but there is a lot of story told through beautiful illustrations. If you’re a fan of dinosaurs, art, then I don’t know why you haven’t picked this up yet, as it can take you to a different world.

Monstress by Majorie Liu and Sana Takeda

Whaaaaaaaaat? I hear you. This one seems kinda out of left field. But hear me out for a second. This book has beautiful art, a lush story, and features a big clash between warring ideals and a lady protagonist. Monstress also features a lot of different types of magic and technology, which I think fits nicely with the theme here.

Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi

Here’s the thing-these books are beautifully illustrated and epic, and they take place in this totally different world with incredible creatures and some amazing mechanized structures and vehicles. I think this story really feels like a great adventure tale in which these children battle for their home and family, which seems to fit right with theme of the video game.

So there we go. Am I the only one excited about robot dinosaurs? What other comics would you add here that I missed?
