In Inbox/Outbox, we document the rhythm of readers’ lives by sharing comics we acquired, the comics we finished, and the next comics we plan to read each week.
Inbox (Comics Acquired)
Stan and Nan by Sarah Lippett (Jonathan Cape)
I read this Guardian review of Lippett’s biography of her grandparents and immediately sent away for my own copy. Holding it in my hands now, I get the feeling that it’s going to make me cry. So I’ll save this as a curative for one of those times when I’m on such a hot streak that I start to look over my shoulder for trouble. Robust weeping over slices of life is sometimes the only thing for the anxiety that spoils good fortune.
Outbox (Comics Finished)
Nutmeg Volume 1: Early Fall: Taste Buddies by James F. Wright and Jackie Crofts (Action Lab)
Being a girl in junior high? It’s a circle in hell. Nutmeg totally evokes the all-consuming trauma of having to figure out what kind of person you’re going to be while navigating shifting relationships. I love that the protagonists are nuanced antiheroes, and I’m looking forward to savoring this series through volumes two and three.
The Mutts Winter Diaries by Patrick McDonnell (Andrews McMeel)
This volume of collected newspaper strips is geared towards children, but reading it in front of the window AC unit while enjoying a popsicle has been keeping me cool during New York City’s current heat wave.
In the Queue (What I’m Reading Next)
Well, I’m going to try to keep up with my pull list. I sincerely recommend everything on it, but…I’m kind of just twiddling my thumbs until my Lumberjanes to the Max Vol. 2 preorder arrives next month!
And you, my friends? With which comic books did you spend a few happy hours this week?
