Inbox/Outbox: July 29, 2016

In Inbox/Outbox, we document the rhythm of readers’ lives by sharing comics we acquired, the comics we finished, and the next comics we plan to read each week.

Inbox (Comics Acquired)

batgirl-1Batgirl #1 by Hope Larson and Rafael Albuquerque (DC Comics)

I love Babs, so there’s no way I wasn’t picking this one up. I was a little wary of the “Babs travels to Asia” plotline going somewhere bad (read: racist), but Larson seemed very aware of the potential problems when I spoke to her in June so I’m cautiously optimistic. Everyone else I know who picked this up on Wednesday loved it, so I’m really looking forward to reading it this weekend.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #10 by Ryan North, Erica Henderson, and Rico Renzi (Marvel)

Mole Man is literally “m’lady”ing Squirrel Girl on the cover. How could I not pick this up???

Outbox (Comics Finished)

supermutant magic academySuperMutant Magic Academy by Jillian Tamaki (Drawn & Quarterly)

This one has been sitting on my coffee table since May so it was about time I sat down and read it. Jillian Tamaki is an amazing illustrator, and she has a delightfully weird sense of humor that really translated well to these vignettes of supermutants in school. If you like comics that show the behind the scenes, normal life of superheros (think Fraction’s Hawkeye), you should give this one a read.

Hot Dog Taste Test by Lisa Hanawalt (Drawn & Quarterly)

This book has been receiving rave reviews and I’m not surprised. Hanawalt’s work is both hilarious and earnest.

How about you? What comics did you read this week?
