DC Universe: Rebirth #1

DC Universe: Rebirth #1, by Geoff Johns, Ethan Van Sciver, Ivan Reis, Gary Frank, Various, and Phil Jimenez (DC Comics).

I know this might be surprising news to you, but apparently the DC Universe is being not-quite-rebooted again, and it starts on Wednesday with DC Universe: Rebirth #1. Now, I don’t read a lot of DC comics for various reasons, but at $2.99 for 80 pages, I thought I might as well check it out, if for no other reason in case it sets up new status quos for Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and those rambunctious kids at Gotham Academy.

Of course I’m getting this. Was there ever any doubt? I mean, I wrote a whole article of just squirrel pun titles for future Squirrel Girl arcs. How could I not buy this, especially when it’s the beginning of a new arc called “I Kissed a Squirrel and I Liked It”? And just look at that amazing romance novel cover.

And, even if for some reason I decided, “nah, I don’t want to read the consistently funniest book in comics right now”, there’s still the fact that my daughter is absolutely in love with Squirrel Girl, and would never let me not buy a new issue.

Honesty time: I’m a little behind on Devil Dinosaur. I apparently forgot to put it on my pull list, and now a couple of months have gone by and I just realized it, so really consider this entry for MG&DD #5-7… My complete failure to manage my pull list aside, MG&DD has been a ton of fun so far, and it’s another great book that I can read with my daughter.    Can’t wait to get caught up to speed.

This issue of Patsy Walker may have the cutest cover (by Brittney Williams) of all time. It makes me want to drop everything and go to the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Patsy and the gang at Coney Island with Hercules?!? Sign me up! (Also, continuing the trend, this has been another great book that I can read with my daughter, though we’ll see if the trend continues next month when guest star Jessica Jones shows up.)

Monstress #6, by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda (Image Comics)

Another confession: I’ve not actually read any of Monstress yet, but after hearing amazing things about it, I picked up the first few issues in the last Image sale on Comixology. I have, however, been a huge fan of Sana Takeda’s since I first came across her work in Ms. Marvel a few years ago; as I noted in my Carol Danvers primer, she was the standout artist of Brian Reed’s run on the series. (She also previously worked with Liu on X-23.) This week’s issue ends the first arc, so I’m planning to binge read the series thus far as soon as I pick it up.
