Art Roundup: Spotlight on THE SANDMAN

C.P. Hoffman

Staff Writer

By day, C.P. Hoffman writes about digital accessibility and the law; by night, they write about comics, pop culture, books, and gender for Book Riot and other sites. They have lived across North America (Indianapolis > Chicago > New York > Montreal > Indianapolis again), but now reside just outside of Washington, DC. C.P. has a particular affinity for Spider-Women, but also loves Wonder Woman, comics about witches, and stories about time travel. For inexplicable reasons, they also tweet a lot about the Fantastic Four. Twitter: @CPHwriter

Welcome to Art Roundup, where we pick a comics character and spotlight their awesomeness with rad fan creations, including art pieces, jewelry, custom toys, and cosplay. In honor of the release of the prequel series The Sandman: Overture in hardcover, this spotlight is on the Endless family from The Sandman.

First off we have a lovely Klimt-inspired take on Desire of the Endless by Christine Griffin, a/k/a quickreaver.

Next up is this fantastic mashup of Death and the Morton Salt girl by Charles Holbert, Jr., a/k/a KidNotorious.

Rico Renzi, the excellent colorist for Spider-Gwen and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, liked it so much he did his own remix.

Now want to see something really amazing? Take a look at this Dream LEGO bust by Tyler Halliwell. I love the use of all of those black pieces to make the hair—it really looks like it is blowing in the wind. Plus, Halliwell has also done busts of Death and Delirium, and they are just as beautiful.

But what about LEGO minifigures, you ask? Jeremy Green has come to your rescue, with a complete set of Endless minifigures:

I’m a total sucker for group cosplay. It’s enough work making your own costume, let alone convincing six other people to make costumes of their own that all look good together. So I loved this Endless family cosplay from Dragon Con 2014:

The costumes are by Spellbound Stitches, and the cosplayers are Melissa Maganuco (Dream), Jill Wong (Death), Carlye Midence (Delirium), Ricardo Midence (Destruction), Sterling Bates (Destiny), Amanda Meldrum (Desire), and Kami Jacobs (Despair). While I have to give mad props for that Despair cosplay (it’s even the first Despair!), my favorite is Delirium, complete with flying fish (“I am following my fish” is probably my favorite line from the entire series):

Both photos are by cosplay photographer David “DTJAAAAM” Ngo, whose website features lots more amazing cosplay photos. Go check it out!

And, finally, speaking of Delirium, this may be my new favorite tattoo of all time:
