Back This: The Harry Potter Alliance 10th Anniversary Fundraiser

Jenn Northington

Director, Editorial Operations

Jenn Northington has worked in the publishing industry wearing various hats since 2004, including bookseller and events director, and is currently Director of Editorial Operations at Riot New Media Group. You can hear her on the SFF Yeah! podcast nerding out about sci-fi and fantasy. When she’s not working, she’s most likely gardening, running, or (obviously) reading. Find her on Tumblr at jennIRL and Instagram at iamjennIRL.

10 years ago, I had no idea that fan-activism even existed. (Hell, 5 years ago I didn’t know it existed.) But the folks at the Harry Potter Alliance had a dream, and in the last decade they’ve gone from a bunch of excited fans to world-changing activists. They made sure all Harry Potter chocolate products are fair trade, sent money to Haiti, have donated almost 200,000 books to literacy charities, and have hundreds of chapters all over the world. They are also running their annual fundraiser to help continue the awesome work, and I’ve got five reasons you should back it.

1. You can wear your nerdy pride in a bunch of different ways.

Are you more excited about the Hedwig shirt or about that library tote? I’m already plotting optimum badge placement.

2. Surprise crafts!

This reward is how I ended up backing twice, because I have met some of the volunteers at HPA crafts and a nerdier, craftier bunch you’d be hard-pressed to find (outside of Book Riot, of course). Do I want a surprise gift made JUST FOR ME??? YES I DO.

3. They understand how important Hermione is to the world, nay, the universe.

Hedwig is great and all, but Hermione is 1000% my homegirl. And there are not one, not two, but THREE possible rewards related to her. You can get text messages from her; you can support her presidential bid; you can attend a convention on leadership named after her. All Hermione, all the time.

4. There is a mystery con??? That probably doesn’t actually exist??

I don’t know what it is or what it means or what the heck is going on here, but I’m into it.

5. There are signed books to be had.

You like books, right? Of course you do. And they’ve got signed ones from Mercedes Lackey, Queen of my Magic Girl Heart, and Gene Luen-Yang of Avatar Excellence.

There are lots of other amazing perks as well — you should go check it out. For the record, I don’t work for the Harry Potter Alliance or belong to a local chapter, but I’ve participated in a few of their events and am proud to call myself a wizard activist. Won’t you join us?

And, bonus! If you’re coming to Book Riot Live, they’ll have a booth there, so you can geek out in person.
