What’s On Your Pull List?: May 20, 2015
Every week, a different Panelteer will give you a rundown of the comics they’re most looking forward to for the week. Floppies, trades, and omniboo are all fair game here. This week, Hélène tells us what’s on her pull list.
Jem & The Holograms #3 by Kelly Thompson and Sophie Campbell (IDW)
This comic is just so pretty! The first two issues left me very impressed with the line work and the bold and loud coloring by M. Victoria Robado. Modern, but retro and cartoony. If the trailer for the upcoming movie did not impress you, come this way. Misfits, star earrings, very big hair and intense makeup. And yes I kind of wish I could just start a band with my girlfriends.
Fade Out #6 by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips (Image)
I love noir. I love Brubaker. I love Sean Phillips. And waiting a month in between issues of The Fade Out sometimes feels too long. As Charlie tries to solve the murder of starlet Valeria Sommer he uncovers some of the dark secrets of Hollywood by roaming its back alleys and obscure corners. Playing with all the codes and archetypes of the noir genre while still surprising the reader with every issue, the book is stunning to look at and hard to put down.
Star Wars #5 by Jason Aaron and John Cassaday (Marvel)
Yes I know. I guess a follow-up to my “Why the new Star Wars comic is not for me” post entitled “why I am still reading Star Wars” would be necessary to explain my schizophrenic behavior. Somehow I still want to be convinced, I still want to be able to talk about the book and… it is just very nice to feel part of the current and renewed excitement for the Star Wars franchise. The previous issue of the series was the top selling comic of the month of April. It is not everything I want in a Star Wars comic, but don’t mind me as I go hang out on Tatooine for a little while.
Lumberjanes #14 by Shannon Watters and Brooke Allen (variant cover by Joy Ang) (Boom!)
Time to head back to camp. Time for adventures. Time for friendship. Time for… snow? Well after, the winter we had this year in Nova Scotia, I would be happy to never see snow again, but if it is necessary to follow the Lumberjanes on their new journey, I’ll take it. After a one-off flashback issue, this could be a good jumping-on point. If you are a regular reader of Panels, you know how much love for this book there is around here.
Daredevil #15.1 by Marc Guggenheim and Peter Krause (cover by Chris Samnee) (Marvel)
Daredevil is the book that started my pull list- the first single issue I ever bought was Mark Waid’s first Daredevil #1. As the run is nearing its conclusion, this issue written by Marc Guggenheim takes us back in time, back to New York, and back to a yellow and black costume. This Matt Murdock is very different from the one in the TV show that we seem to all have enjoyed recently, but I like him at least as much!
