Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is honoring the centennial of its short fiction compilation Best American Short Stories with a forthcoming special anniversary edition, 100 Years of The Best American Short Stories. The special edition, edited by Lorrie Moore, will include a selection of short stories featured throughout the series, which launched in 1915.

When I first encountered this text, I did what any Latin geek will—set about trying to translate it. But it wasn’t long before I realized that Lorem Ipsum is mostly gibberish, a garbling of Latin that makes no real sense. The first word, “Lorem,” isn’t even a word; instead it’s a piece of the word “dolorem,” meaning pain, suffering, or sorrow. So where did this mash-up of Latin-like syntax come from, and how did it get so scrambled?

So for an example, we start giving books out when kids are about six months of age. That’s what the Reach Out and Read [hospital literacy program] model is. Our model actually gives books to children of all ages, but in terms of the Reach Out and Read model, I’ll go in and hand a book to a young mom for her baby. The baby will grab the book and put it in its mouth because that’s the way they explore their world. Right?

Basically we are learning to just try to get books into kids’ hands whenever and wherever we can. Why not hospitals too?
