Critical Linking: May 7th, 2014

Many books don’t receive the media attention or readership they deserve; we could’ve made this list of the year’s most unfairly neglected books at least twice as long.

Even though it’s still early, I don’t think taking a moment mid-year to think about 2014’s most overlooked books is a bad idea.

How diverse is librarianship? The field has a ways to go in order to mirror the makeup of the U.S. population. These pie charts compare general population stats from the U. S. Census Bureau to the diversity of 2012 MLS graduates, drawn from a 2013 Library Journal survey.

An area in the book world that could use some attention to promoting diversity in its ranks–just like every other area.

Fantasy author George RR Martin has said that omitting scenes of rape and sexual violence from the epic Game of Thrones series “would have been fundamentally false and dishonest”, as fans express mounting concerns about the graphic way certain scenes from Martin’s novels have played out in the television adaptation.

But dragons of course are not at all false or dishonest.
