Many authors who write romance books veer toward self-publishing because of the popularity of the genre digitally (not having a publisher with print distribution hurts less), the amount of creative control they get, and the royalty, which is typically around 70% for a self-published title, versus anywhere between 15% and 25% for traditionally published ebooks.

I hadn’t thought of this before, but it makes a lot of sense. (That 70% number is wrong though. That’s only typical if you give a retailer an exclusive. If you go with multiple retailers, the royalty is more like 30%).


It hardly sounds like mass-market material. But Geek Love has been a perennial best seller, and its cultural influence has been prodigious. The book has inspired and moved writers, artists, and performers to tell their own wild stories.

Wow, 25 years since Geek Love was published. It really does now seem like it was ahead of its time.


In 2013, the Wall Street Journal talked with authors of two books who paid thousands of dollars to ResultSource and subsequently landed on the Journal’s own bestseller list. “Precisely how [ResultSource] goes about [its business] is unclear,” Jeffrey Trachtenberg wrote.

Well, this is pretty sketchy.
