Critical Linking: March 2, 2014

In 2012, the Central Intelligence Agency released documents indicating that Steinbeck had offered to spy for his country. The author planned a tour of Europe in 1952 and asked the agency if it needed anyone on the ground.

STEINBECK WAS A SECRET SPY.

But the most powerful reading experiences I’ve had all happened when I was seduced into the specific and alien lives of characters who are not like me at all. Characters who do things I would never do. Characters with whom I likely do not share common party styles or desired vacation destinations or favorite Beyoncé songs.

The results of the “which Shakespeare character are you” Buzzfeed quiz say less about you than the results you didn’t get. Or something.

Stine’s “Goosebumps” series is a collection of ghost and horror stories for young children. Since Stine published the first “Goosebumps” in 1992, it’s become the first book series many parents purchase for their kids. Now “Goosebumps” is set for the silver screen, with Jack Black starring and a March 2016 release date.

I fully support this casting decision.
