The Advanced Vocabulary Quiz | Bet you don’t know these words

This isn’t news, but a good set of vocabulary quizzes is a helpful way to get spooled up for the week, don’t you think?


Doris Lessing, the uninhibited and outspoken novelist who won the 2007 Nobel Prize for a lifetime of writing that shattered convention, both social and artistic, died on Sunday at her home in London. She was 94.

A great one.


While I wasn’t looking, a quartet of Cory Doctorow‘s audiobooks showed up at — they aren’t available on due to Audible’s DRM-only format and Doctorow’s anti-DRM stance.

A DRM-free supplier of audiobooks. Very interesting. The DRM-free movement is still marching. Good to see.


Coupled with a publishing trend of high-minded polemics against the industrialized food chain, all this makes for a rare opportunity to study how people discover new ethical principles, hold them firmly for a little while, and then abandon them.

It certainly feels like a book can change how you see the world, but this study suggests that the effect might be fleeting.
