Critical Linking: April 4, 2012

42% of college graduates never read another book after college.

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s hear it for American higher education.

“Reading’s not a luxury, art’s not a luxury. It’s about your soul, and it’s about yourself. And if reading is a luxury, being human is a luxury.”

Ah, that’s more like it.

The Reading Group Killer imagines a world where someone pretends to enjoy her monthly book club, when in fact she is a soulless monster. Which member of your group do you think is most likely to be plotting the death of everyone else in the room?

If you can’t pick that person out, then it’s probably you.

“Books are good for you, so who cares what anyone else is reading?”

Hmmmm. It can’t possibly be the case that reading any book is good for you; there are books of great hatred and ignorance out there. And yet, the business of creating hierarchies of what is “best” to read seems impossible.
