Read Harder (A Reading Log): Track Books, Chart Progress Paperback – September 4, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
This is not just a log to keep track of what you read and your own personal reviews. Evenly interspersed among these entry pages are 12 challenges inspired by Book Riot’s annual Read Harder initiative, which began in 2015 to encourage readers to pick up passed-over books, try out new genres, and choose titles from a wider range of voices and perspectives. Challenge yourself to:
- Read a book about books
- Read a book that was originally published in another language
- Read a biography of an author you admire
- Read a book set in a bookstore
- And more!
If you’re a book lover, buy it for yourself. If your friends and family love books, buy it for them. If you are in a reading group, buy it for all of them. If you are encouraging a child or grandchild to develop a love of books and literature, buy it for them. Each and every person will be grateful.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2021This is a beautiful journal that also provides a cool guide for a reading exploration offering twelve different "challenges" to find books that are new to you and/or outside of your go-to genres. The journal pages offer room for 3 book evaluations & notes between the challenges, which is versatile: I was planning to use this for a book club but I also read other things, so I could use this to track all my reading (book club and non-book club), or do the challenge three times over, or read 3 books for each challenge before moving on. There's a bit at the back with a book reading tracker for a year, and some illustrated book spines where you can list favorites or want-to-reads (making them look like those cute book lists people draw on Instagram). Overall, I think it's a very fun journal, and it's suitable for anyone who's into books. I'd say age 12 up through adult, any gender (I'd say this as a one-time 6th grader who would have loved it, and as someone who's tutored middle school readers on up). The design is universal. The recommendations are challenging without being intimidating. The design of the book and the space given for each book are also not intimidating. Getting really into books for the first time or back into books? This is a great choice. I'm excited to finish my book and start this journal!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2019I joined a book club last year and have really enjoyed the discussions of the books - why we enjoyed them, why we didn't, the imagery, the themes, etc. I haven't discussed a book like that in ages. When I came across this book journal, I thought it might help me contain my thoughts for book club, and I've had so much fun reviewing the books in this neat little notebook. I like the challenges as well. I tried one and unfortunately did not like the book I chose, but it has been immensely enjoyable skewering it in my own private space. I don't journal regularly, so this is a nice nod to that habit without the commitment of frequent entries. I intend to purchase more when I fill this one up!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2020I like the format of this journal with interspersed prompts to encourage the reading of books outside my comfort zone. What I don't like is the binding doesn't open well to be able to write on the pages. I feel like I am wrestling the book to keep is flat enough to write neatly (which is a struggle for me anyway).
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2018Well, I haven’t started using this yet so I don’t know what I’ll rate it but, is there anyone out there who knows how to use the Yearly Graph towards the end of the book? Is it as simple as just coloring in a box for every book you read that month or am I totally off base here?
Anyway, it seems to be a pretty cool item for the super serious reader. The suggested readings are really good for the exercises listed; especially if some of those topics are of genres you’d never think of reading. At least if you’re going to read something out of the norm the books listed are supposed to be very good which might make reading those topics easier or even enjoyable.
So, I’ll check back after a few days to see if anyone can answer my question above. Thanks, in advance, for your help!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2020I LOVE this reading journal. It is perfect for documenting your readings and jotting down a quick review and notes per book. And the intermitten reading challenges are great if you are looking to expand your literary horizons! They provide excellent reccomendations for each challenge to help you along. The only downer is that I prefer to write a lot more about my readings than the note page allows. Which is why I keep a second notebook for extensive notes and analyses. But I still absolutely love this reading log! Perfect size!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2018I love the company, so I was pretty sure that I would love this, too. I’ve never kept a book journal before, but am trying to be more mindful about what I’m reading.
I love the details! Each book gets 2 pages here. There are 12 reading challenges spread throughout the book with 5 suggestions for each. I particularly like that the pages for the challenges ask you to specifically reflect on the challenges. I tend to forget to do that when moving through a reading challenge check-list style.
The pages are thick enough that pens won’t bleed through. The spin, once worked a bit, will lie flat without breaking. There is a ribbon bookmark and an elastic strap to keep the journal closed.
I absolutely love the three pages of piled-up book illustrations with blank spines to create a TBR list! This really set the journal over-the-top for me.
I really hope that they do a new one with different challenges in the future!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2019Wow -- for all of the imagination of the Read Harder challenges through the years, this is a sub-par effort. I hoped there would be lists and prompts, but this is basically an overpriced BoB, with nothing that seriously ties it to the Read Harder brand beyond the name. I didn't use mine, continued with my basic BoBs I've been using for years, and gave it to my sister, who never reads, but says she plans to this year. I think it's probably great for a person who doesn't read seriously, but it's not for those who want to stretch their reading and actually read...harder.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021This book 📖 journal has suggestions for books!!! A small summary about the suggested book. What a fantastic addition to a book journal. I purchased mine used & it was in perfect condition. If you’re a reader, this is a nice, tidy journal to track your books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great concept
This book is great size (not too small, though also not too large/bulky).
I like that the prompts are not always identical, and you are given different categories to reflect on your reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift for book lovers!!
Bought this as a gift and really wanted to get one for myself upon its arrival. This reading journal is the perfect size and really well thought-out. The challenges are excellent for expanding a someone's literary repetoire, and the recommendations are great for seasoned readers who already read widely. Great quality and worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Instant favourite
I love this reading tracker. What could have been better is the placement of challenges. I would’ve liked it more spaced out. But everything else is excellent

5.0 out of 5 stars Muy bueno, aunque no me duró mucho
Me gustó mucho.
