Dear Book Nerd: An Advice Column is Born
Here at Book Riot, we like to think of ourselves as providers of information, entertainment, and maybe even spiritual enlightenment (okay, that last one is probably a stretch). We also love all of the funny, thoughtful, and insightful comments we receive on our posts from readers like YOU.
In an effort to combine these things, we’re starting a new weekly (or however often we get questions) column called “Dear Book Nerd.” This will basically serve as an advice column featuring and catering to our readers. It’s your chance to ask us anything, so don’t be shy.
(The role of “Book Nerd” will initially be played by me, but I will most likely be calling on other Book Riot contributors whose skill-sets might be more appropriate for specific questions.)
There are no hard and fast rules regarding what kinds of questions we’re looking to answer, but we’d like it if you kept them open-ended and at least vaguely book-related. (This is also not intended to be a reader’s advisory column, per se. Should you need help with this sort of thing, you can always contact your local librarian. Ahem.)
In case you are wondering if your question is bookish enough, here are some examples:
NO: “I’m thinking of asking this girl out. What should I do?”
YES: “I always see this girl in the bookstore and I’m thinking of asking her out. What should I do?”
NO: “I think I’m having an existential crisis. Help?!”
YES: “After reading The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath, I think I’m having an existential crisis. Help?!”
NO: “I hate school. Should I quit?”
YES: “I hate school because my English teacher makes us read boring books like A SEPARATE PEACE. How can I get through this?”
I think you get the idea.
Questions can be submitted using the form below. You can be as brief or as long-winded as you like, and the more information you provide about your problem, the easier it will be to answer you. (Just please try to keep your question under 1,000 words – my eyes will thank you).
Should your question be chosen for publication, you will be contacted via the email address you provide (your email address will not be published). Your questions can be lighthearted or serious, but please make them sincere. Feel free to use a pseudonym.
