Beardy Captain America (and Other SDCC 2017 Comic Book Movie News)

San Diego Comic Con was this past weekend, and I’ve got some news for you. I’ve done the hard work of curating the comics movie/TV news that I think you need to know. Starting off with the most important:

Beardy Captain America

Captain America. Infinity War Part 1 trailer.

Obviously the biggest news to come out of SDCC was Captain America’s beardy face in the leaked Avengers: Infinity War (part 1) trailer. This beard is giving me life, and it has convinced me to see these films despite the number of characters jammed into them.

This beard is telling me that Captain America isn’t the guy from Civil War. He’s rugged. He’s seen some shit. He’d rather give up shaving if it means sticking to his principles. Thanos chose the wrong moment to rain down hellfire because Steve “Those Arms” Rogers is NOT having it.

Black is Beautiful

Black Panther

Marvel revealed a new Black Panther poster, and the cast was such a delight leading up to their panel, during their panel, and after seeing the latest trailer. It’s wonderful to see a superhero cast made up of mostly black actors including black women.

In Thor: Ragnarok, we also got a new poster, and trailer which includes more scenes of the lovely Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie looking like a badass. More black women in superhero movies, please!

Thor: Ragnarok. Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie.

Other Marvel Studios news

There’s a new Defenders trailer, and Ant-Man and The Wasp has added two new cast members to its roster: Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne (the original Wasp), and Laurence Fishburne as Bill Foster (Black Goliath in the comics). Captain Marvel concept art was revealed (below), and her movie will be set in the 1990s. That’s an interesting choice. She’ll be fighting the Skrulls, and pre-eye patch Nick Fury will be in it.

Batfleck is here to stay

Leading up to SDCC, there were rumours that Ben Affleck was going to stop playing Batman, but Affleck cleared things up, and said Batfleck isn’t going anywhere. Long live the Batfleck! This means there’s still a chance for my “Batman, Alfred, and a Baby” movie…

Girls just want to be Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman. SDCC. Little Girl. Representation. 2017.

I think Wonder Woman is fine as a film, and I would have liked more speaking roles for women of colour, but with that said, it was the first WB/DC movie that didn’t have me regretting the entire experience. It’s also great that many women especially little girls have found their representation through our favourite Amazon. The picture above is a perfect example of that.

Other DC movie news

Justice League SDCC Poster. 2017.

DC revealed Aquaman footage, but for those of us who weren’t at SDCC, we’ll have to wait a bit. Wonder Woman 2 is in the works, and the Flash movie has a title: Flashpoint. Does that mean it’ll be based on the comic event of the same name? Who knows! I hope not. Shazam! will be a film and no. It’s not the character played by Shaquille O’Neal in Kazaam.

Justice League has a new trailer, and a poster (above) that looks a lot like an Alex Ross painting which is funny because Alex Ross’ paintings look a lot like real life. Trippy, right? Green Lantern Corps was announced in the past, but it was announced again with a fancy logo. The Lanterns are also mentioned in the new Justice League trailer.

DC detour: Young Justice season 3

Warner Bros. Animation. young justice season 3 characters. 2017.

Young Justice is back with a third season, and it’s called Young Justice: Outsiders. The characters are (L to R) Static, Kid Flash, Robin, Wonder Girl, Spoiler, Blue Beetle, Thirteen, Arrowette, Arsenal, and Beast Boy. It’ll be on Netflix in 2018 with 26 episodes. I loved the series, and although I prefer the original crew, I’m excited to see Static.

Other comic book films:

Dr. Doom, and Spawn will have movies. Kingsman 2 released a new trailer (I can’t wait!).

SDCC is a huge event, and there’s a good chance I’ve missed some news. If so, share it in the comments, or tell us what you’re excited for the most! In the meantime, I’ll leave you with beardy Captain America in this Avengers: Infinity War concept art.
