Amanda Kay Oaks

Staff Writer

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Amanda Kay Oaks has a BFA in Creative Writing and Literature from The University of Evansville and is a current creative nonfiction MFA student at Chatham University. An AmeriCorps alum, online tutor, and literary journal editor, Amanda considers herself a professional wearer of many hats and isn't sure what she'll do if she ever actually has only one job at a time. When she isn't working, reading, writing, or pretending to be a practiced yogi, Amanda can most likely be found snuggled up on the couch with her cat, Artemis, and a plate of cookies. She tweets T.S. Eliot quotes a little too often and tries to keep up with her personal book blog, I Write Things. Twitter: @I_Write_Things

By now, it’s that point in the year where you’re most likely starting to struggle to keep New Year’s Resolutions (if you haven’t already cheerfully admitted defeat). I know I’m finding it harder and harder to drag my butt onto the mat to keep up with my personal resolution to do at least a little yoga every day.

Since so many of us make fitness/health related resolutions, I thought it would be nice to round up some of the books out there by YouTube fitness instructors and Instagram stars to help keep that motivational spirit going.

Here are just a few of the books out there by women bringing fitness to your computer (or cellphone) screen.

Namaslay: Rock Your Yoga Practice, Tap Into Your Greatness, & Defy Your Limits by Candace Moore.

Candace runs the YouTube channel Yoga by Candace, which provides a variety of full length practices to follow along with. Her voice is super soothing, which helps get you in that meditative state of mind. This book takes her yoga philosophy off the screen and onto the page.

Strala Yoga: Be Strong, Focused, and Ridiculously Happy from the Inside Out by Tara Stiles.

Tara Stiles has a whole catalog of short videos on YouTube, designed to get you moving and help you pump a little yoga into your day. She also has health tips and is currently posting a ton of pregnancy positive yoga videos and pictures. This book lays out the foundation of her personal take on yoga, Strala Yoga.

Every Body Yoga: Let Go of Fear. Get On the Mat. Love Your Body. by Jessamyn Stanley.

Jessamyn Stanley (@mynameisJessamyn on Instagram) is a body positive yogi who posts photos and videos of herself doing yoga to prove that every body is a yoga body. This book puts that philosophy into print, as it should be. I’m definitely hitting “preorder” on this one.

Hot Body Year Round: The Pop Pilates Plan to Get Slim, Eat Clean, and Live Happy Through Every Season by Cassey Ho (creator of Pop Pilates/Blogilates).

Cassey Ho created Blogilates and Pop Pilates from the ground up, transforming her love for fitness and health into a fashion and fitness empire. Technically, she’s more Pilates instructor than yogi, but I couldn’t imagine leaving her off this list. This book compiles her ideas about eating healthy and getting fit, while loving your body every step of the way.
