Inbox/Outbox: August 12, 2016

My kid broke his arm this week, so I spent more time fretting over him than I did reading. But the book I did finish (and the few I managed to start) was excellent. Let’s get to it:

Inbox (Books Acquired)

seeds on iceSeeds on Ice: Svalbard and the Global Seed Vault by Cary Fowler (September 6, Prospecta Press)– Popularly referred to as a “Doomsday vault” or “Seed Ark,” the Svalbard Seed Vault houses and protects over half a billion seeds, many of which are the most useful food crops, to protect humanity in the case of widescale starvation. I’m fascinated by its existence, and this book is beautiful.

Serpentine by Cindy Pon
–A coming-of-age YA fantasy based on Chinese mythology, which follows the adventures of the handmaiden of a young daughter of a wealthy family. I snagged this when I saw it was on sale for $0.99, since it’s been highly recommended by other Rioters.

Outbox (Books Finished)

Daughters Unto Devils by Amy LukavicsDaughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics– Evil Little House on the Prairie! After a difficult winter consisting of real (maybe!) stir-craziness, Amanda’s pioneer-era family decides to ship out in search of a new and larger cabin. They find an abandoned one that just happens to be covered in blood inside, but it’s FINE, it’s all going to be FINE. (It does not turn out to be fine.) A creepy, one-sitting read.

In the Queue (What I’m Reading Next)

push backPush Back: Guilt in the Age of Natural Parenting by Amy Tuteur–Recommended by other moms in the Book Riot back channels during a conversation about how “attachment parenting” can have extremely sexist undertones. I’ve always been uncomfortable with a philosophy that keeps women literally tied to their children for most of the day, but have never really examined why that is. Hoping this will help me clarify my thoughts–so far, so good.

Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead— When Oprah speaks, I listen.

That’s it for me! How was your week in reading?
