Welcome to Off-Panel, your weekly digest of comics news, from the gutters and beyond. This week: all the news that’s fit to print from WonderCon.
DC publisher Jim Lee remarked during the panel, “At the end of the day, Dan and I are comic book people. This is what we live and breathe. The comics are the source material for what you’re seeing in other media. We’ve got to keep that vibrant and exciting, and that’s what Rebirth is about.”
DC released some long-awaited details for Rebirth. I will allow myself to feel excited by the Hope Larson Batgirl and the Gene Luen Yang Superman.
Roslan delved into the company’s newest launch, Santeria: The Goddess Kiss. The book written by David Wohl (Witchblade, EA Iris) follows an EMT in spanish Harlem as her life is turned inside out by an ancient power.
Um, yes. I am interested.
But this fall, Kodansha will step into all-original U.S. comics with the new “Attack On Titan Anthology.”
Inspired by the original series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama, the anthology will feature stories of the Titan world as told by Western artists like Scott Snyder, Gail Simone, Faith Erin Hicks, Kevin Wada, Kate Leth, Evan Dorkin, Paolo Rivera and the current “Batgirl” team of Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher and Babs Tarr.
This is a powerhouse of talent, no doubt. But I hope this anthology raises interest in the American market for Konansha’s other titles, too.
Of “Spider-Man,” Bendis reminded the crowd that Miles Morales is now in the mainstream Marvel Universe, and said that readers will see what, “the Latino side of his family is like, and how that informs him as a young man.”
“We’ll see Ms. Marvel coming in –Sara [Pichelli] draws the best Ms. Marvel,” Bendis added, also teasing that a character will join Miles at school, someone who readers haven’t seen in school with him before.
MILES MORALES AND KAMALA KHAN ARE GOING TO BE BEST FRIENDS FOREVER THAT’S WHAT I’M READING HERE
IGN rounds up some of the best cosplay from WonderCon. I am in love with this BB-8 dress.
