Inbox/Outbox: February 26, 2016

Happy Friday, bibliophiles! Let’s talk books:

Inbox (Books Acquired)

sex objectSex Object by Jessica Valenti (June 7, Dey Street Books)— Commence the Muppet arming, folks, I am so excited about this one. Valenti is one of the smartest women writing about feminism these days, and I’ve already started reading this memoir about her life and the effects everyday sexism have had on her and other women.

A Tyranny of Petticoats edited by Jessica Spotswood (March 8, Candlewick)— A historical fiction/fantasy short story collection about kick-ass American girls robbing banks and fighting injustice, from some of my favorite YA writers out there (Marissa Meyer! Kekla Magoon! Marie Lu!). This can only be a good time.

Outbox (Books Finished)

jane steeleJane Steele by Lyndsay Faye (March 22, Putnam)— Jane Steele is a Victorian orphan whose life parallels that of her favorite literary character, Jane Eyre, except Ms. Steele also happens to be a serial killer who targets men who abuse women. While the novel is both loosely based on and heavily features Jane Eyre, this book stands completely apart. The writing is full of gut-punch sentences and ethical questions that will have you rethinking everything you think about violence, and about one of the classic novels of the Western canon.

In the Queue (What I’m Reading Next)

the dream of myreturnThe Dream of My Return  by Horacio Castellanos Moya— For BTBA consideration– other judges who have already read this have called it “unsettling,” which I’m always onboard for. Let’s get freaked out!

The Study of Seduction by Sabrina Jeffries (March 22, Pocket Books)— A young woman enters a marriage of convenience with a friend in order to escape a stalker, who in turn threatens to expose the newlyweds’ darkest secrets. Also, the married-for-convenience couple has started kissing a lot. Who knew?!

That’s it for me–what was your week in reading like?
