Read only from my TBR pile. Use the library more often. Read more diversely. Read more books in translation. Read more books written by women. Read more, period. Bookish New Year’s resolutions can be as varied and creative as readers themselves are, and we want to hear yours!

We wanted to know what those reading resolutions you set were for 2016 and you answered. Here are 40 of ’em, in no particular order . . . it’s interesting to see some common themes here (like read the books I own!):

  • Track down all of the books from my fav authors and get my library to get them!

  • Read 75 books, half of them ones I already own and haven’t read yet.

  • Read at least 3 books per month from my Kindle of books I’ve already purchased.

  • Read more books in translation.

  • Read 200 books and 1/4 of them be POC authors.

  • I want to read all my favorite authors books. Working on C.S. Lewis right now.

  • To read some of the longer books in my TBR pile.

  • I have two: read more nonfiction, and read (or donate) some of the books on my overflowing TBR shelf.

  • Finish all the series I’ve started (or decide to give them up), Read 60 books.

  • Read the books I already own then pass them along for someone else to enjoy!

  • Be more selective about what I read. Aim for quality not quantity.

  • Increased percentage of non straight white male authors (approx 50% last year). Half my reading to occur outside my main comfort zone (Fantasy/Sci-Fi was about 80% of my previous years reading).

  • Read at least 15 books I already own before buying anything new.

  • To finish the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge! (ed: we like this!)

  • To mostly read the books I already own and be careful about side-tracking from that goal!(#readmyowndamnbooks)

  • I am actually doing a reading challenge, I have never done one before and I while I am going out of order (because I read 5-7 books a week), it is crazy fun. So my resolution is to finish the challenge and keep on reading!

  • To read what I desire when I desire. Last year I spent a lot of time forcing myself to read books due to group reads, buddy reads, and looming due dates. I passed up reading from my TBR a lot, so this year I plan on reading exactly what my current mood requires.

  • Read on more platforms, not just physical books.

  • Make more time for reading books from authors of different backgrounds.

  • To complete the Book Riot Challenge 2016. I loved the challenge last year. I also resolve to not buy more books until I’ve read more of the ones I already own.

  • Get more books at the library!

  • Read more of the unread books already on my shelf; be better about giving myself permission to not finish a book

  • My resolution is to read 75% women this year!

  • To read a non-fiction book for every fiction book I read.

  • To read at least 60 high quality, diverse books, that will lead to a greater understanding of the world around me. Particularly I want to read indigenous non-American authors.

  • Fit more audio books into my schedule.

  • Read books I’m excited about regardless of reviews.

  • To read a book per week and write about each one.

  • In 2016, I want to read more books that are outside of what I’m used to. More nonfiction, in particular. Additionally, I plan to re-read as much Shakespeare as I can get my hands on. It’s been years since I’ve read any of his work and I’m feeling the void. And, as I say every year: I just want to read MORE!

  • To put a healthy dent in my TBR collection — I own a ridiculous number of books I haven’t read yet.

  • I want to read an equal number of print books, ebooks, and audiobooks.

  • To read more books for pleasure without feeling bad about it!

  • To explore authors from anthologies/collections. To pretend a little harder that I’m culling books from the 3,000 that I own.

  • Get back into the habit of reading.

  • To read a translated work monthly: at least one & no duplicate countries. Listen to nonfiction in car & 2 young adult novels a month (I’m a high school librarian), in addition to my review books.

  • To keep a reading journal.

  • To open the dictionary find a new word and its meaning and to use it in a conversation at least once a week.

  • To read only women writers in order to find myself in stories.

  • My 2016 reading resolution is to take time between books in order for me to reflect on what the story was, what I liked about the writing, what I didn’t like about the writing, and to overall allow myself some reflection time before picking up the next novel. I think this will help me appreciate what I’m reading more.

and this one might be my favorite because it’s so simple and yet could mean so many wonderful things…

  • To build more reading relationships.
