Every month, the rad recommenders of the New York Public Library select 100 (one hundred!) great books to feature on their new Staff Picks site. We think that’s pretty awesome, so we’ve asked them to share one highlight with us each month.

This month’s pick comes from Gwen Glazer, Readers Services.

headscarves and hymensHeadscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution by Mona Eltahawy

A call to action, vocally opposing the religious fundamentalism that oppresses women in the Middle East. Eltahawy (an Egyptian-American journalist) uses her own personal decisions about things like wearing a headscarf and preserving her virginity to force readers to look at her subjects as real women with real rights. She won’t let you treat it as an abstraction. Instructive and important.
