Critical Linking for August 6th, 2015

Culled from the 14,000+ titles in PW’s Fall Announcements issue (on newsstands now and available in full here), we asked our reviews editors to pick the most notable books publishing in Fall 2015. Links to reviews are included when available.

August is like one long Sunday night waiting for autumn, so it’s a good time to take a look at this list of The 50 Most Anticipated Books of Fall 2015.

Brilliant Books, an independent bookstore in Traverse City, Michigan, made waves recently when they announced they would be offering refunds for Go Set a Watchman, calling it “an academic insight rather than a nice summer novel.” Owner Peter Makin told Melville House that he decided to offer such refunds after hearing disappointment from a loyal customer. However, managers of other independent bookstores around the country say they’ve heard few complaints about Go Set a Watchman, and even fewer demands for refunds.

This is what happens when you make a decision based on one customer.

In short, the book is a retelling of the Book of Esther (a Jewish story about a strong Jewish woman, who saves her people, and keeps her faith, and is not a romance) in which a Nazi camp commander saves a Jewish woman from Dachau and takes her to Theresienstadt in then-Czechoslovakia. There, they fall in love, and through a magically appearing Bible, find Jesus, and save Jews. At the end, the woman converts to Christianity because that’s her redemption arc.

Oh man. This is a garbage fire.

Props from the now-concluded TV series “Mad Men” are up for auction at Screenbid. The auction includes a copy of Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather” that Don (Jon Hamm) was reading in the last season. It’s up for auction with two other books — “The Andromeda Strain” by Michael Crichton and “Hawaii” by James Michener — that appeared in the same scene.

This is some of the most famous TV reading of all time.
