Dear Book Nerd #27: Dear Book Nerd is One Year Old!

Welcome to the Dear Book Nerd podcast, a bi-weekly show that answers your questions about life, love, and literature! This episode celebrates the one year “podcast-aversary” of Dear Book Nerd, and I just want to thank everyone who has ever listened to or contributed to the show. It’s been a great year full of interesting conversations, and since she was my very first guest co-host, I wanted to celebrate by inviting the wonderful Rebecca Joines Schinsky back on the show! Rebecca and I reflect on the year, look ahead to the next, and answer two listener-submitted questions that are sure to help you start your year off right. Thanks, Rebecca!

QUESTIONS DISCUSSED:

Dear Book Nerd,

I use Goodreads to keep track of the books I have read, and I love it! I love being able to see what books I have read, how many I have read, and what books I want to read. Recently, though, I have developed a desire to go into greater depth about the books I read. I want to keep a reading journal in which I can write more personalized reviews of the books, maybe make some character notes, etc. I have seen several physical journals on Amazon, but I am thinking I want something digital (for IOS) so that it is more easily searchable. First, I would love to know if either of you use a personal reading journal and, if so, what do you use; and second, I would love recommendations on a digital format.
Thanks!

Kristine

Dear Book Nerd:

I currently use Goodreads to keep track of books I have read, and books I want to read. However, I am looking for something separate from this that I can use to keep track of my own personal thoughts on books I have read. I could easily make a spreadsheet or a word processing document, or even use something like Evernote, but I am wondering if an app (I use Apple devices), or some kind of site exists for this purpose? I am envisioning something simple where I can enter the title, author, date read, and my notes on the book. Any suggestions? I have tried searching for such a thing but all I find are apps to help me catalog my home library.

Thanks.

Kristine

Dear Book Nerd,

I have this habit of putting off reading what I think are going to be really good books. I think because I am afraid they won’t be that good, or that if I read them now, I won’t have anything good to read later – you know the cliché save the best for last etc. I’ve had this habit for several years; as a result I feel some regret about it. I also have this habit where I get really caught up in a series or author, and I’ll put off reading the last one in the series or the few books I haven’t read of the author. Do you do that, what are your thoughts on that, do you have any advice for me?

I’d be curious if you’ve ever had that problem, do you have trouble at all picking what to read next? Do you find yourself putting off book because you want to save it for later?

From one book lover to another,

Tim

READER MAIL:

Dear Book Nerd,

I just wanted to thank you for the awesome podcast. I work from home 90% of the time so I listen to a lot of podcasts. DBN is easily one of my favorite. I’m the nerdiest book nerd I know and I love it. I love everything books. There have been so many books I have learned about from you and others. I’ve made a couple book “challenges” for myself for the New Year with some inspired by the podcast.

For fear of droning on,

Have a great New Year and keep up the great work,

Nick
